How many are on the County payroll? 20,000?

And every one a patronage party hack. It's considered currency in HC, the County is like the Fed printing money. Once you're a "made man" in the HCDO you're taken care of for life, just look at Steve Lipski. After drunkenly pissing on people and resigning from the city council in disgrace, he turns up head of the city Economic Development Corporation, and then an assistant principal at Harrison HS for $122,532/yr. Anyone remember the guy with 2 full time government jobs, a teacher at County Prep and full time supervisor at JCPA? He must be well connected to get 2 plums!

Gee Brewster. This was exactly what Christie was working on addressing. Maybe the Dems of NJ should have let him before wasting tens of millions on a stupid bridge lane closing

Hudson County proposes $538 million budget with tax increases for 6 towns

BY CAITLIN MOTA
The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY - Hudson County has proposed a $538 million budget that would raise taxes in six of its 12 municipalities this year.

The Hudson County Board of Freeholders is expected to make a final vote on the budget, which is $2 million less than it was in 2016, at the body's June 8 meeting.

Under the proposed budget, Jersey City residents would see the largest county tax increase, up roughly 9 percent from last year. West New York, Weehawken, and Hoboken could see about a 6 percent hike. East Newark would see about a 3 percent jump, and North Bergen would see just over a 1 percent increase.

While Jersey City hasn't seen a municipal tax increase in three years, it is the second year in a row the county's largest city will be hit hard by county tax hikes. In 2016, Jersey City saw a 10 percent increase.

Hoboken, too, saw a 4 percent hike 2016.

Can someone please explain why & how different municipalities within HC are levied with such different percentages of increase ?
Thanks.

Jersey City council set to adopt half-billion dollar budget

The City Council is expected to adopt the $589 million 2017 city budget at a special meeting on Monday morning.
The budget comes with no municipal tax hike. The spending plan has increased by about $16 million since the council unanimously introduced it in March. Most of the increase is a $15 million boost in this year's anticipated surplus.
Mayor Steve Fulop has said the steady tax levy can be attributed to an increase in property tax rateables, hotel occupancy taxes and municipal court fines.

Hey, I agree!! Neither will ever happen however, there's just way too much money and power in both venues for politicians to ever give either up. HC has not been able to consolidate the police, and only partially the FD.

FWIW, if HC were a single city, it would be both bigger in population and denser than Boston, Denver or Portland.

I read awhile back that Hoboken was paying for to the county than their municipal tax bill after their revaluation in 2012.
