Jersey City plans second new police station

JERSEY CITY -- Jersey City's east police district, which covers a swath of the Downtown, is getting a new police station.

Mayor Steve Fulop announced last night that the new, 30,000-square-foot station will replace the 126-year-old police precinct on Seventh Street. Fulop last week announced the city plans to build a new station in the Heights too.

Unlike that plan, the city's proposal for the new Downtown police station would not involve taxpayer funds. Developers chosen to transform the old Emerson Radio factory on Coles Street into residential housing would build the station on the property at their cost.
