JERSEY CITY -- A 23-year-old man was beaten and thrown to the ground during an attempted robbery on Friday night, police said.

The victim was walking near Hopkins and Oakland avenues at about 10 p.m. when a man wearing a puffy jacket hit him in the face with either his fist or a firecracker, according to a police report.

Another man kicked the victim to the ground and demanded money. The victim said he did not have any cash and the suspects demanded his cellphone, which he refused to hand over, the report states.
