Jersey City police officials tout crime decrease; residents in 'wait and see' mode

With 2015 more than half over, top city officials say they are "cautiously optimistic" that the police department is slowly easing crime in the city's problem-plagued areas.

Sitting down with The Jersey Journal to discuss the first six months of 2015, Public Safety Director James Shea and Police Chief Philip Zacche say they see sharp drops in most major crimes citywide; six fewer shootings from the same period last year, and 13 fewer than in the first half of 2013; and a "major decrease" in civilian complaints against cops in the last 12 months.

"All gains are fragile," said Shea, speaking last week during an interview at City Hall, "but we're happy with the way our trends are showing."
