I wish the HC freeholders and the JJ would stop blowing smoke up our butts. Cutting tax by $2m? Really!!!? The original increase proposed was 4% ~$20m. So the increase is being shaved back to ~$18m. BFD. Time to boot some of these worthless clowns out of office.

Freeholders move to cut county tax levy by more than $2M

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... than_2m.html#incart_river

Quote:

Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and Freeholder Bill O?Dea made public two competing amendments tonight to the county?s $512 million 2014 budget which would each each cut the county tax levy by more than $2 million.

The proposed budget currently includes a 4 percent tax hike, with Hoboken set to pay $8 million more this year and Jersey City about $6 million more. Four more municipalities would have much smaller hikes, while the six remaining would see county tax cuts if the proposed budget is adopted as is.

The administration?s budget would result in a reduction in the county levy of about $2.2 million, while O?Dea?s amendment would see a reduction of about $2.9 million.

The major difference in the amendments is that O?Dea?s calls for cuts of about $1.7 million and the administration?s amendment calls for cuts of about $876,000.

The two amendments were released at tonight?s freeholder meeting in Secaucus at which budget questions were fielded by the directors of the county Law Department, Surrogate?s Office, Register?s Office and Health and Human Services.

The amendments are to be introduced at the June 5 freeholders meeting and will be voted on at the June 12 freeholders meeting. A vote on the budget is also expected on June 12.

Tonight?s meeting in Secaucus Town Hall was attended by freeholders E. Junior Maldonado, O?Dea Albert J. Cifelli and Doreen M. DiDomenico.

I agree with the "Hudson City" idea. Make it like 6th borough.

We are paying less because Hoboken doesn't abated in the same proportion as JC does. Hoboken with a population of 50,000 residents, one fifth of JC is paying 19% of the budget. I am sure those citizens will wise up and sue JC.

Comparing Hudson to Morris County is like comparing apples to oranges - the median income in Hudson County is $58,700, vs. $97,900 in Morris County, and we have 4X as many people living in poverty. And that's just taking into account easily accessibly Census stats - Morris County is substantially less built up, presumably with much less infrastructure to maintain than Hudson County.

We could argue indefinately what came first - bad governance or escalating costs - but I would ask are Republicans anywhere have successfully governed a place where there wasn't a surfeit of wealth/low level of need, that enabled a small government, supply side, approach to work?

Even though we have a tax increase, we are paying 32% of the budget but have approximately 45% of the population. Hoboken, Secaucus, Bayonne, and North Bergen are picking up the tab.

Before The Heights was part of Jersey City it was a separate town called Hudson City.

Although there are obvious political obstacles, the more I think about it the more I like this idea.

.

Jails, parks, welfare, county roads, and public employees sums the budget up. And admin. A lot of admin.

The doc shows that about 10% of budget goes to City employee's healthcare plans - $42 million or so. Under Obamacare that would fund about 10,000 plans. Hudson County employ that many people? There's also about $25 million toxic debt in unfunded comp for unused vacation/sick time. That will hit taxpayers in the wallet after DeGise leaves I guess.

The most interesting line items were two of the County's top revenue streams:

Quote:

Page 4 - Local revenues
Mental Hospital - ~$18.4 million
Page 6 - Anticipated revenues (from state)
Maintenance of Patients in State Institutions for Mentally Retarded - ~$31 million

And note they reduced county debt by over 8 million in the same budget . . . even Essex County's increase was less than half of Hudson County, at $1.5%.

Anyone have a link to the proposed budget? Or one more recent than 2011? It would be nice to know what they are doing with our money. Their track record on handling money is less than stellar - Hudson County got nearly 1/2 billion of stimulus funds, but created less than 600 jobs. Almost $1 mill/job. Ballotopedia wiki Quote:

Ah, yes, the economies of scale.
This is why NYC city taxes are so low!

I have been told (but have not confirmed for myself) the county planning department has a large number of people assigned to it. It's supposed to have two. Basically it is a no show job market for political hacks.

Do we really need county government? Connecticut managed to abolish county government over a decade ago.

Jersey City, Hoboken would see tax hikes under 2014 Hudson County budget plan

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
March 12, 2014 at 7:41 PM

Hudson County plans to introduce a $512.1 million 2014 budget proposal tomorrow night that comes with a nearly 4 percent tax hike.

Hoboken and Jersey City are getting socked with the highest hikes, with Hoboken set to pay $8 million more this year and Jersey City about $6 million more. Four more municipalities are getting much smaller hikes, while the six remaining would see county tax cuts if the budget is adopted.

In a statement, County Executive Tom DeGise called the spending plan ?a sensible budget that relies on good practices and conservative estimates.

?As in past years, we present a plan that avoids gimmicks and reflects an effort to fund critical needs while holding the line on key budget drivers such as wages,? he said.

The spending plan will be presented at tomorrow night?s freeholders meeting.
