"People should be wary and they should be suspicious," the deputy chief said. "Ask questions. Make sure your brother, your mother, is actually who they are talking about. Someone might say 'We have your brother.' Ask, which brother?"

Hahah, "ask which brother..." Thanks for the helpful tip, courtesy of the JCPD.

Jersey City officials warn residents on kidnap scams -- listen to audio of 'scammer'

Lauren Casselberry/The Jersey JournalJersey City Deputy Police Chief Peter Nalbach, right, and Mayor Jerramiah Healy talk about the recent rash of scams, including one in which the caller demands a ranson, claiming that her has kidnapped a family member.
Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy warned residents of a recent rash of scams, including a fake kidnapping and extortion attempt in which a caller threatened to murder the brother of a Greenville woman if she did not wire ransom money.

Listen to the call here:link

"Don't call the police or anyone -- I have your brother," began the message which was received at about 9:30 a.m. yesterday and originated in Puerto Rico, according to Healy and Deputy Police Chief Peter Nalbach. "If you don't get $1,000, I'm going to shoot him in his head."

The caller then instructed the woman to make no calls, take no calls and speak to no one.

The panicked woman immediately headed to a bank to get the money, but on her way her brother called her. He said he was at work, he was fine and everything was normal. So instead of going to the bank, the woman went to the police.

It is the 10th time in the past three weeks that similar scams have been attempted in Jersey City and that the calls appear to originate from Florida and Puerto Rico, Healy said.

"This is going on across the tri-state area," Healy said.

Nalbach said the scammers are fishing for someone gullible and he advised recipients of such calls to ask questions.

"People should be wary and they should be suspicious," the deputy chief said. "Ask questions. Make sure your brother, your mother, is actually who they are talking about. Someone might say 'We have your brother.' Ask, which brother?"

Anyone with information on similar scams is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL and if it is an ongoing incident, call the police department at (201) 547-5477.
