Jersey City police are looking for a man who has been grabbing young children and kissing them over the past few weeks in Leonard Gordon Park, also known as Mosquito Park, in the Heights, officials said.
On Friday a report of a man "touching and kissing kids" brought police to the park at Kennedy Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue where a girl told them she saw a man grab her 8-year-old brother from behind and kiss him on the cheek.
The girl and another witness said it happened May 26 at 4 p.m. but that they called police Friday because they had just seen the same man grab another juvenile and kiss the child on the lips, reports said.
While at the park Friday police also spoke to an 11-year-old boy who said on May 18 he was approached from behind by a man with the same description and the man grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around to face him, reports said.
The boy said the man said, "What's your name?" but he pushed him away and went back to playing with his friends, reports said, adding that the officers took the boy home and told his mother about the incident. The boy told the cops he sees the man in the park often around 3 p.m. but also as late at 8 p.m., reports said.
Another officer who responded to the park Friday spoke to a woman who said her 10-year-old granddaughter came home from the park one day during the previous week saying she a man had grabbed her, reports said.
The girl said the man pull her toward him and asked where she lives but she broke free and ran to another section of the park, reports said, adding that she believes the incident happened on May 26. The grandmother said she has seen the man numerous times and has tried to speak to him but he does not reply, reports said.
Three people described the suspect as 6 feet tall and of Indian descent, reports said, adding that at least one person said he is 30 to 40 years old. The grandmother said the man always carries a bag with potato chips and other foods in it, reports said. Police scoured the area of the park Friday but came up empty-handed.
"Parents, when they go to the park, should keep a watchful eye on their children," Police Director Sam Jefferson said today. "To ensure their safety, they should be aware of people around the playground who are not with children and are acting suspiciously. Do not hesitate to call police immediately."
The Jersey City Police Department is working with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit in the search for the suspect.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Jersey City police tipline at (201) 547-JAIL.
