I finally scored my folder. A vintage Dahon 'California' model. :D
Unfortunately it is still in NC waiting on a little more restoration work, but it should be up here in a week or three.... and it has 16" wheels which is kindof a pain ridingwise, but it fits nicely into a smallish rolling suitcase.... the kind that is the smaller sort of airplane allowed carry-on luggage - which can be rolled OR worn as a backpack (ideally when the bike is unfolded and being ridden).
Now I just need to save my shekels until I can buy a custom fit Bike Friday!
Just sorry I missed the Saturday ride.....

Assuming you know about Saturday's ride you know the website www.bikejc.com also Manhattan has a folding bike ride & festival every year usually on a Saturday in May. Yeah I am trying hard to part with my shekels as well for that Bike Friday. See you on the road.

How about a folding 10' kayak on the PATH?

Love New York City? Love to paddle in and around New York City? Well, now there's the perfect kayak to proclaim that love for all to see. The MTA MetroBoat is the only kayak in the world which has the eye-catching iconic New York City subway map infused into its deck. The image will not run; the image will not peel off - it's part and parcel of the kayak.

This expedition-quality 24lb. kayak, based on the best-selling Citibot, fits into a backpack and assembles in minutes. Now, you can store your kayak in your apartment, toss it over your shoulder, and hop onto the subway or a bus, and be on the water in... a New York minute.

You can one of the smallest lightest folders right here in Jersey City -- very cheap I should add! haha http://cgi.ebay.com/FOLDING-MINI-A-BI ... em4aa2b10861#ht_500wt_945 I like that Pacific IF -- but not at that price -- if anyone wants a funky design there is a German Strida bike for sale on ebay - pickup in Philly -- might go for only $150 http://cgi.ebay.com/Strida-Folding-Bi ... em230853208f#ht_500wt_945 Here is a race between the two -- through London:

PATH folks were at the 33rd Street station yesterday so I asked them - they walked me over to the Rule board which basically states that bikes aren't allowed between 6:30-9:30am and 3:30-6:30pm.

They explained that folding bikes were allowed anytime

Yes! You'd think that would be obvious, but somehow the utter logic of this has escaped PATH.

On the contrary it has not escaped PATH. Think about it, you bring your bike during rush hour to a PATH station that has 2 tracks going in both directions. It would be hard to discern if the biker is about to board the reverse rush hour train or not.

Brave the heat and you can bike around the Queen today.

=================
Queen to lay wreath at Ground Zero in New York

Tuesday, 6 July 2010

The Queen is to address the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York for the first time in 53 years.

The trip is her first to the city since 1976 and follows her nine-day tour of Canada with the Duke of Edinburgh.

After her speech on world peace, the Monarch will lay a wreath at the site of the World Trade Center which was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

She will also officially open a British Garden of Remembrance in Hanover Square in honour of the 67 UK victims.

The Queen's speech to the United Nations is considered by Buckingham Palace to be one of her most important in recent years.

BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said she will address the General Assembly as the head of state of Britain and 15 other countries, plus the head of the Commonwealth.

Extreme heat

He said: "That, together with her nearly 60 years on the throne gives her an opportunity to draw on her position as the most experienced head of state in the world and share some thoughts and conclusions about the way the world has changed over past decades."

He said the governments of all 16 "realms" had been consulted about what she should say and the Queen herself had taken a more than usual "hands-on interest".

She, [the Queen] more than anyone, knows that you cannot accept an invitation from the UN's secretary general to address the General Assembly and not have something worthwhile to say

But he said there was no suggestion she would overturn convention and make a political speech.

Bill Hoffman, from the New York Post, said officials in the city were concerned about extreme heat forecasts of up to 38C during her visit to Ground Zero.

He said her "whirlwind" visit to Manhattan should last about five hours.

On Monday, an explosion at a power facility in Toronto reportedly disrupted the Queen's state dinner when it plunged the city into darkness.

A quick answer "bag the bike" you can't stop someone when the bike is not visible; Out of sight out of mind, no food for thought. PATH usually looks the other way with folding bikes. A full size bike has a lot of parts & pieces jutting outward any move can cause the bike to latch onto a person or what they are carrying but when folded it becomes more forgiving.. If passengers are allowed on with strollers, wheelchairs, luggage, packages, and of course the famous backpacks then a folded bike isn't that much different. By having a bike that folds then it won't inhibit others, although it can get pretty tight in those PATH cars.

Really? Making one of the 2 tunnel lanes for bikes and pedestrians actually makes sense to you? Or you got some other bone to pick?

I think eventually as the city becomes more crowded and makes more no car zones along with congestion and higher toll fees, things will be less fuzzy.

Yes, they'll close half the car capacity of the Holland tunnel so a few bikes can use it rather than pay the same amount to use a ferry. That's presuming they'll charge you at least as much as a car, not that there'd be anything like the number of cars that would use that lane.

I hate fuzzy thinking.

I don't really give a shit about being green. I only ride for purely recreational use because it is fun and is good exercise. I don't take my bike on the PATH during weekdays either because I walk to work from downtown. It would be one thing if folding bikes were illegal but apparently they're not. Like I said, people buy em cause they're smaller which means less of an annoyance for people around them. I'm sorry your leg gets poked, but people are also starting to use bags also.
Bikes are only going to become more popular and the subway allows full size bikes on at any time, so it's kinda a reality that has to be dealt with. (like strollers and shopping carts..and fat people)

I never mentioned building a damn bridge either, just let bikes go through the tunnel. I would bike to work if there was that option.

strollers are completely different story. it sucks but they are kids it is part of life. a suitcase happens but not everyday and if you are fat then you are fat you are not hitting me in the leg with a pointy metal thing.

eff your footprint. take the subway. does it make you feel good about yourself that you are "reducing your footprint" drinking the kool-aid much?

don't you think if building a bridge was feasible they would? If they did do it they would not do it for your bikes or you to walk over they would do it for cars.

greenwashed morons annoy the crap out of me.

I remember a few years back the Path website stating that folding bikes were OK. Then a year later my wife bought one, but when I looked again it there was no mention of folding bikes (maybe a subtle way of deterring them on the trains). But I see from posts 6 and 7 they are OK.

Since we haven't heard a single anecdote of someone getting hassled by PA cops about a folder, bagged or not, it's not an issue.

Do you REALLY have no concept of how expensive a suspension bridge over a mile of water would be? I'm always shocked that people just don't grasp the fundamentals of the engineering around us. The NYC subway extensions under way costs 2 BILLION per mile! It'd be far cheaper to provide helicopters for all cyclists and pedestrians in perpetuity than to build that bridge.

Never mind the fact that a million well heeled people on both sides of the river would complain it would ruin their view.

BTW, Paul MacCready built a bike that flew the English Channel in 1979. Start training and your problem is solved!

Please, not another "why don't they build a footbridge across the Hudson" thread. If you wanted to bike over a bridge you should have moved to Fort Lee or Brooklyn.

That said, many enlightened transit agencies have bike racks on their buses. Now THAT would make a whole lot of sense.
