Hoboken Police Blotter: Charged with hitting man's head with pipe in bar fight

By Amy Sara Clark/The Jersey Journal
December 07, 2009, 1:28PM

Hoboken police have charged a 31-year-old man with smashing a pipe into another man's head during a fight outside Hobson's Choice early Sunday, police said.

Mir Shafi, of Sunnyside, N.Y., got into an argument with a 28-year-old Jersey City man just before 2:42 a.m. As the pair were arguing, Shafi picked up a 9-inch long, 2-inch wide pipe from a pile of garbage and hit the man in the head. The men did not seem to know each other before the altercation, police said.

Bouncers from Scotland Yard, across the street, rushed over and held Shafi until police arrived, police said.

The victim was taken to Hoboken University Medical Center where he received four staples in his head. He was released the same night, police said.

Shafi was charged with aggravated assault and two weapon possession charges.
