Crack arrest made after struggle: cops
Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Jersey City cops seized 16 bags of suspected crack cocaine and arrested a city man on drug distribution charges Sunday night after he kicked and punched at the officers, officials said.

Manolo Vazquez, 27, of Bergen and Communipaw avenues, was arrested about 7:10 p.m. at Sackett and Oak streets and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and drug charges, including drug distribution near a school and near public property, reports said.

Police doing surveillance watched as Woodrow Robinson, 58, of Van Nostrand Avenue, walked up to Vazquez and handed him money in exchange for a small object, reports said.

Robinson was charged with drug possession after perimeter units stopped him and found he had one bag of suspected crack cocaine, reports said.

But when the officers closed in on Vazquez, he refused to put his hands behind his back and after the officers took him to the ground he punched and kicked at the cops until he was subdued and cuffed, reports said.

Police found three bags of suspected crack cocaine on Vazquez at the time of his arrest and a search at the police station turned up a dozen more bags of suspected crack, reports said.

Vazquez was in prison from Feb. 16, 2001 to Aug. 15, 2002 on a weapons offense and two counts of drug distribution within 1,000 feet of a school, corrections officials said.
