View Larger Map Judge adds two years to Jersey City man's sentence Published: Friday, July 08, 2011, 3:00 AM By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal As a result of an appellate court?s ruling, two years were added yesterday to the sentence of a Jersey City man who was 16 when he fatally shot a Bayonne man. On June 18, Kevin Evans, now 18, of Oak Street, pleaded guilty to the Jan. 30, 2009, aggravated manslaughter of Nigel Gore, 21, of West 55th Street, and the aggravated assault of a 20-year-old Jersey City man. Resized Image TASHEERA WILLIAMS holds a picture of her daughter lying next to her husband Nigel Gore, who was shot and killed on the corner of Rutgers and Sheffield Street, in this 2009 photo. Both victims were shot in the back in Jersey City at Rutgers Avenue and Sheffield Street at 9:12 p.m., officials said, adding that Evans was originally charged as a juvenile but was later waived up to criminal court. Aggravated manslaughter is a first-degree crime and carries a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to recommend Evans be sentenced to the 10-year minimum, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Tracey McQuaide said. But at the September sentencing, Hudson County Superior Court Judge Lourdes Santiago sentenced Evans to eight years, and stated several reasons for her decision, including his age, officials said. The Prosecutor?s Office appealed the sentence and the appellate court ruled the sentence was too short. Yesterday afternoon Santiago reconsidered the matter and sentenced Evans to 10 years. The victims were walking along the street when Evans opened fire on them with a revolver, McQuaide said. Gore was the father of a 7-month-old girl and Evans? was killed on his first wedding anniversary.

Homicide detectives have arrested a 16-year-old Jersey City boy, charging him with gunning down a 21-year-old Bayonne man, the father of a 7-month-old boy, on the first anniversary of his marriage.

"I told my son his father isn't coming home," a tearful Tasheera Williams said yesterday. Nigel Gore, of West 55th, was fatally shot at Rutgers Avenue and Sheffield Street at 9:12 p.m. Friday.

Gathered at his home last night, Gore's family members took little solace from the fact the Oak Street boy turned himself in to authorities yesterday morning at the Duncan Avenue headquarters of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad. Due to his age, officials have not revealed his identity.

On the night Gore died, Williams said she raced to the Jersey City Medical Center. She soon learned that Omari, her baby, no longer had a father.

"I screamed," Williams said last night, recalling the scene. "I fell on the floor. I started banging on the floor and I cried so loud. I screamed 'No, No, No.' That's when someone said 'Do you want to see him?'" Williams said.

"It was unreal," she continued. "His eyes weren't closed all the way. I kept wishing he would get up. I just kissed him on the forehead."

Born in Antigua, Gore came to the United States in July 2001. In 2006 he graduated from Lincoln High School in Jersey City where he played varsity soccer and junior varsity basketball. He moved to Bayonne in February last year and worked in construction for a Brooklyn company, his sister Jellene Gore said last night.

"Yesterday we picked out the casket and it was really the hardest part," said Jellene Gore. "I think it really sank in today."

The night Gore died, he had gone to a friend's home to play games, Williams said.

Investigators believe the 16-year-old and another male approached Gore and another man on the street and the juvenile fired a revolver multiple times, DeFazio said.

An autopsy determined Gore was shot in the hip and the bullet caused fatal internal damage, DeFazio said.

The man with Gore was treated and released from the Jersey City Medical Center, he said.

Police have not determined the motive for the shooting but say it was not a robbery and it was not random and continue to look for the man who was with the Oak Street boy, DeFazio said.

Anyone with information about the murder is asked to call homicide detectives at (201) 915-1345.

A viewing for Nigel Gore will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Watson Mortuary Service, 26 Gifford Ave., with the burial on Saturday.

-- what a damn shame. a 16-year old? charge the parents too! they deserve the a decent chunk of blame for such a senseless crime.

Seek suspect,16, in gun death
Monday, February 02, 2009

By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Bayonne man was shot dead in Jersey City Friday night and police are negotiating with the family of the suspected 16-year-old trigger man to turn himself in.

"We believe it was one individual who fired the gun," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. "We have been in contact with his family and they have told us that they will try to have him come in voluntarily, but we are in fact still looking for him."

Nigel Gore, 21, of West 55th Street in Bayonne, was fatally shot and the 20-year-old Jersey City man he was with was injured on Rutgers Avenue near Sheffield Street at 9:12 p.m., DeFazio said.

Investigators believe the men were walking along the street when two attackers - one of them possibly masked - walked toward them, and one of them fired a revolver multiple times, hitting the men and damaging a nearby car, DeFazio said.

An autopsy conducted by the state Regional Medical Examiners Office, shows that Gore was shot in the area of his hip, but the bullet traveled deeper into his body causing fatal internal injuries, DeFazio said.

While motive has not been established, investigators have ruled out robbery or random shooting and believe the murder was premeditated, DeFazio said.

The man with Gore was treated and released from the Jersey City Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, he said.

The Star-Ledger contributed to this story.

Bayonne man shot and killed in Jersey City

by Christopher Dela Cruz
The Star-Ledger
Saturday January 31, 2009

A Bayonne man was fatally shot and his friend injured after two men wearing ski masks walked up to them on a Jersey City street and fired multiple times, authorities said.

Nigel Gore, 21, and a Jersey City man, who has not been identified because he is a witness to the crime, were walking down Rutgers Avenue at around 9 p.m. when they encountered the masked men walking in the opposite direction, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. The attackers fired numerous times, damaging a nearby car, DeFazio said.

Gore was transported to Jersey City Medical Center. He later died of his injuries, DeFazio said. His friend was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, DeFazio said.

DeFazio said there was no sign the attack was a robbery, adding the shooting appeared to be premeditated. It was not known if the murder was gang-related, DeFazio said.

An autopsy is being performed today by a state regional medical examiner in Newark. The Jersey City Police Department and Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Squad are continuing their investigation.
