Nine freeholder wins for HCDO

Thursday, June 05, 2008
By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The Hudson County Democratic Organization flexed its muscles and reasserted its hold over county politics with a sweep of all nine freeholder races in Tuesday's primary elections.

And yesterday it needed only one word to explain it. Unity.

"We speak with one voice," said Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the HCDO chairman. "(Tuesday) night's results are an indication of the unity that is there."

HCDO officials said having the faction led by Union City Mayor and Assemblyman Brian Stack back in the fold allowed for a unified and "positive" campaign.

Only two freeholder candidates will face Republican opposition in November, and neither is expected to have any trouble winning in the heavily Democratic county.

Freeholder Chairman Jeffrey Dublin, who crushed challengers with 82 percent of the vote in District 1 - excluding absentee and provisional ballots - attributed his victory to heavy support from the HCDO and the active role he said he played in trying to stop closures of Greenville's hospital, a Lafayette Post Office and bus routes.

In one of the closest races, Fourth District Freeholder Eliu Rivera, with 1,782 machine votes, fended off a robust challenge from Sean Connors, who garnered 1,423 votes.

Connors said that his vote total proves there is an active opposition to the HCDO in the county and it "sends a message to county officials that they must do their jobs."

In District 1, which covers Bayonne and a portion of Jersey City, incumbent Freeholder Doreen DiDomenico, who picked up 58 percent of the machine ballots, beat her closest challenger, Mary Jane Desmond, by 21 percent.

Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone said Desmond's 1,800 votes showed that the HCDO is "weak" in Bayonne. HCDO officials pointed out that DiDomenico's 1,010-vote victory is a sign of how organized the organization is in Bayonne.

"We had a wonderful campaign thanks to our leader, Jason O'Donnell," DiDomenico said. O'Donnell is the chairman of the Bayonne City Regular Democratic Organization.

In District 5, where Freeholder Maurice Fitzgibbons is not running for re-election, Hoboken Police Capt. Anthony Romano, running under the HCDO banner, defeated Frank Raia and reform candidate Ines Garcia Keim.

Michael Bartulovich and Jacob Hahn ran unopposed in the Republican primaries.

Journal Staff Writer Carly Baldwin contributed to this report.

That's hilarious. This means that, in my district, 14, there might actually be more Greens and Libertarians than there are Republicans.

Turnout low in Jersey City

By Matt Friedman [/b]

For a town where politics is a blood sport, Jersey City is pretty quiet today.

One thing?s clear in Ward F ? whether it?s because Mayor Healy appeased Joe Cardwell with a spot on the Municipal Utilities Authority or for some other reason, there does not appear to be a serious push from or State Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham on behalf ofRob Andrews in this heavily African-American section of town.

Driving through Martin Luther King Drive, which cuts through state Cunningham?s strongest constituency, you?re hit with two blocks approaching Freeholder Director Jeffrey Dublin?s headquarters that are plastered with sign?s bearing Dublin?s face, and where Lautenberg posters adorn about every lamp post. But one block farther south, campaign signs disappear almost completely.

The Hudson County Freeholder candidates are the only ones with significant troops canvassing the city and standing outside of polling places. For the most part, their campaign literature makes no mention of Senate candidates, even if they share a line. And altogether, turnout seems to be quite low across the board.

As of 1:45 this afternoon at the Mary McLeod Bethune Center polling site on MLK Drive, only 43 votes had been cast ? all Democratic.

?For this ward, you?d expect to have 100 votes by now,? said poll worker Malvin Sims.

But it?s not just districts where local power players back Rob Andrews where turnout is low. Up in the Heights, in Healy?s home district of Ward C, district 19, only 15 Democrats and one Republican had turned out to vote as of 2:30 this afternoon to cast their votes Number 8 Elementary School.

?It?s very low, especially for this district,? said poll worker Luzvivien Mangrobang.

?(Healy) will be upset,? she joked.

In downtown, where Ward E councilman Steven Fulop, who backed Andrews, holds a good deal of sway, poll workers said that turnout was typical or slightly better than average for a non-presidential primary. As of 11:30 this morning, 36 Democrats and two Republicans had turned in out district 13, 44 Democrats in district 14, and 72 Democrats and four Republicans in district 15.

?For this time, it?s kind of a good turnout,? said 15th district poll worker Ziomara Ocasio.

Yeah, because the job of President/Commander-in-chief is the same thing as that of a Senator. Riiiiiiight.

And yes, get your facts right. I'm not a huge fan of his, but Lautenberg is not 91 years old, nor is he the one whose finger is on the button.

Plenty of Senators, for good or for ill, have served well past Lautenberg's age. By contrast, John McCain, if elected, would be the oldest person to ever be elected to the presidency.

My bad...91 by the end of his term, 84 now...hardly a difference.

The man is not a viable public servant.

Lautenberg is 84 not 91.
