Three Guys from Italy is the best pizzeria in Jersey City. It was great being able to go there after class and grab a slice, while I attended Hudson County Comm. Coll. It was still great to be able to grab a slice right before transferring buses while attending NJCU.

The place it self didn't look all that good, but once you bite a slice you become a fan! That location was golden, too bad it was forced to move.

Maybe they had something cheaper too; what you can see at the customers' mouth is not rich in toppings. Now you're making me regret I didn't try it while it still existed?

Whoa, whoa. Hold up there JSQ. Three Guys is the best pizza in town. The place always looked like crap but the pizza is great. And no "air on top" - a pie weighs like 10 pounds. I hope nothing changes at the new location.

i thought all the retail was rented at state square already. i hope they dont get rid of quiznos. it kicks subways ass.

That pizza looked miserable. I never tried it, but it seemed more like warm bread, with air on top.

Journal Square eateries on the move to make way for demolition

While the rest of the world was ringing in 2008, a McDonald's employee was flipping the last Big Mac in the Journal Square eatery.

And Three Guys from Italy pizzeria, a Jersey City landmark for 50 years, also closed up shop on New Year's Eve - both to make way for a $500 million two-tower development rising on the old Hotel on the Square block.

But have no fear, McNugget and pepperoni pizza lovers. Both establishments - the last to close to make way for the highly anticipated development - will reopen within the shadows of the towers-to-be.

McDonald's is relocating just across the square to 2873 Kennedy Blvd., the site of the former "Queen Bee" beauty supply store and next to Lord's Men's Shop, a McDonald's spokesman said. They are hoping to open in that location in April.

Three Guys is moving to 2854 Kennedy Blvd., a ground-floor commercial space at the State Square apartment complex, which contains 130 rental units and opened about two years ago.

"We look forward to serving our loyal customers in the Journal Square area as we have done for many years," Dan McVeigh, real estate manager for McDonald's NY Metro Region, said in a statement.

The burger maker didn't go without a shove. The city sought and received a court order requiring McDonald's to vacate the premises at 15-16 Journal Square by Dec. 31, city officials said.

The city also is still in litigation with McDonald's over the value of equipment McDonald's had to leave behind, said Christopher Fiore, assistant executive director of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency.

Even though they are moving, Three Guys from Italy aren't changing landlords.

Harwood Properties of Jersey City, which is a development partner in the new project and therefore part-owner of entire block next to the PATH Transportation Center, is also part-owner of the State Square complex.

"We don't feel good about it, but at least were not going too far," said Three Guys owner Andre Greco about vacating his space next to the PATH station.

"The location by the train, you couldn't beat it," Greco added. "But we have no choice to leave. We're lucky to find a location and we took it."

Greco said his rent will be a little less than he was paying and he hopes to be cranking out pizzas at the new location in six to eight weeks.

With McDonald's and Three Guys gone, demolition of all the structures still standing on the old Hotel on the Square block should be finished by April, Fiore said.

The new development, to be built over the course of two years, will have a 65-story north tower and 45-story south tower. The two towers will contain 1,500 market-rate rental units, 150,000 square feet of retail space, and 600 parking spaces.

Mickey D's has until Dec. 31 to clear out of its Journal Square home.

According to Jersey City officials, the Hudson County Superior Court has ordered the fast food Goliath McDonald's gone by the end of the year so plans for a two-tower development on the old Hotel on the Square block can proceed.

The court issued the order in September, said Christopher Fiore, assistant executive director of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency.

The agency condemned the property at 15-16 Journal Square and reached an agreement to buy it from owner Robert Kang for $2.1 million, Fiore said.

Under the terms of a redeveloper's agreement, the city will be reimbursed this money. But McDonald's -- whose representatives didn't return phone calls to comment -- isn't satisfied with the amount the city wants to pay for the machinery and equipment it'll have to leave behind, Fiore said.

Fiore declined to say how much money the city is willing to shell out for the equipment since the matter is still in court.

According to several city sources, McDonald's has found another location in the Journal Square area along Kennedy Boulevard, but that information couldn't be confirmed with the burger maker.

Relocating the tenants of 15-16 Journal Square, which also houses a dentist's office and card shop, should be the final hurdle to moving forward with demolition plans for entire 1.5-acre site, city officials and the developer said. The card shop has already closed.

Lowell Harwood, one of the development partners, said Friday he expected the site to fully leveled before the next spring and the construction of the foundation to begin by the summer.

Harwood and his development partners own all the properties on the block. Besides the tenants at 15-16 Journal Square, the only one other remaining commercial tenant is Three Brothers Pizza at 1-7 Journal Square. Getting the pizzeria to move once his company has the requisite demolition permits won't be a problem, Harwood said.

The $500 million project is to consist of 1,500 residential units, 150,000 square feet of retail, and three levels of parking with 600 spaces.
