There's a foreclosure notice for 587-593 Jersey Ave. in the fourth column on page 24 in today's Jersey Journal.

The notice seems to be for the funeral home property at Fourth Street. It's not the old location of either Melt or Go/Cafe Brand.

The lender is Northern Source L.L.C., the borrower is Hudson Developers L.L.C., and the judgment involved is for about $1.3 million. The sale is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2008.

I guess one practical question about this is whether it means you can park your car there while the foreclosure process is under way without getting towed.

I walked by there a weekend or 2 ago, and noticed that funeral home was looking really run down, maybe this explains it.

That place has been vacant for at least two years now. Heard some rumors it was to be turned into condos but in light of the most recent info..I guess not.

Don't park your car there as I think there is either a vigilante resident who calls the parking authority or the parking authority employee who lives on the block is a complete a...hole.

This place would make a great B&B/ fancy restaurant. Put a saloon in the garage so guests could mix with locals and the fine dining on the first floor of the house. I don't think people would want to permanently live in an old funeral home (condo-ized), but it would be cool for a small hotel. If I had a million dollars (or 3), that is what I would do with it. I love that fountain!

Does anyone know what the deal is with the cars that park in the side lot there?

My bf and I have been wondering about the arrangement those cars had, and he had asked someone who parked there once how it was that they could leave their cars there. I think the person told him that they used to know the owner, but that the owner had sold the place, or something. I'm really vague on the details.

Does anyone know why the boarded up funeral home is still boarded up on 4th and Jersey Ave? Who owns it and are there plans to get rid of it? It's such an eyesore and when I happen to walk by it , it smells terrible.

I've heard (and am pretty sure I read here) that there are plans to make it into, you guessed it, CONDOS. But of course this could just be a rumor.

Plans were brought before the planning board over a year ago -- before the home mortgage crisis. The projected needed a variance I believe to remove the garage building on the south side of the lot. The plan was for condos. I don't recall what happened with it, but even if it was approved, the economy began collapsing last September, and now things are worse. Still, I suppose there have been actually, quite a few smaller projects that have broken ground in the last few months, so maybe this is small enough to remain unaffected.

There's a reason. Did you ever see one of those news stories about a dry cleaner that suddenly and unexpectedly goes out of business and the customers clothes get locked inside and they can't get them back? This was a similar situation except it wasn't clothes that got locked inside. I remember how irate the customers were when they couldn't get their dead relatives back.

It's not zoned for multiple car parking so the owner of funeral home is in violation of parking authority ordinance and several have complained to me personally while making calls to Councilman Fulop on their behalf.

Does anyone know anything about the large, seemingly abandoned funeral home on the corner of Jersey at 4th street? It's a really interesting building, but hasn't been in use for years--yet no For Sale sign is ever there.

There are a group of investor that bought it for about $1mm a couple years ago. They want $2mm if you have the pocket change.

Honestly - if I had the coin it would be an awesome single family home.

While it sits empty, the neighbors are loving all the free off-street parking they're getting.

any home older than say 70 or 80 years has had dead bodies in and out of it.

funerals used to be held in living rooms.

in old homes and apartment buildings with narrow staircases, you often see little alcoves cut into the walls at the landings. though they conveniently hold statues of the Virgin Mary, they're called "coffin corners," because that extra bit of space made it easier for a coffin to make it upstairs.

I'd be more freaked out living in a place where a lot of people died.....like a converted hospital.

Hi have heard about the coffin corner in the old homes.

I looked it up on the net:

The above is actually a very popular architectural myth that grows with every historic house tour. The reason for the indentations on the staircases is purely architecturaly decorative. Evidence does not exist which shows that people could not merely move the body downstairs where the coffin was being kept for showing.

An interesting sidebar to the funeral home that it once was the residence of Dr. Kopechne, the uncle of Mary Jo Kopechne, who died in July of '69 when Ted Kennedy's car went off the Chappaquiddick Bridge. Just a bit more lore to the place.

Wow, doesn't this place look a thousand times better now with all that horrible white and green siding and paint off!

It looks almost beautiful, great news for the neighborhood that they are refurbishing this place rather than demolishing and building some disproportional modern carbuncle.

Robin.

I couldn's agree with you more, Tern - the place looks +1000% better. Does anyone know what the plans are for it?

I'm always surprised that the church building across the street hasn't been purchased up - the little church looks abandoned - and turned into condos or a private home.

Well, we could all hope for something fun to move into that old funeral home on 4th & Jersey, but it looks like we won't get our wish.

Construction started this morning to convert it into apartments. Apparently there will be ten units in all, including the main building and the garage. Not sure if it will be a condo or rentals.

I hope they keep that marble fountain with the four horses. I've convinced my little niece and nephew that they come alive when there's a full moon, and run amok in the new Hamilton Park playground. (That climbing wall looks awfully hoof-dented, don't you think?)
