Judging by that Facebook page, this is just another maladjusted millennial with identity issues and in search of a purpose in life. Twenty years from now she will be fighting against whatever new windmills happen to be in vogue at the moment, all while talking about the good old days and how the system has kept her down. Proving once again the wise words of Ben Franklin: youth is wasted on the young.

Does she want to take the entire city back or parts of it (her hood)? I'll assume she is being price out of her neighborhood so it's probably one of the areas that's on the cusp of gentrification.

Someone seriously needs to call this person a whaaaaaambulance for that butthurt. Are they kidding me with this nonsense? "Oh no, now it is nice and I never bought property (because I never had a real career that would enable me to do so) and now that it is nice and has amenities (again, that I cannot afford) my rent is also becoming unaffordable. #TAKEITBACK to the ghetto it was so useless people like me can keep living here!"
Maybe she should pack it up and head to Newark, which will have that same "vibe" she is looking for.

Providing more services to those that contribute more money isn't discrimination. That is common sense and occurs absolutely in every other application. Discrimination is where you say "oh sure, you provide more money but you're also [black/white/male/female/a foreigner/etc.] so you get less than others who contribute the same do."

Report: San Francisco To Shut Doors Over Rising Rent
SAN FRANCISCO?Saying that staying in its current location was no longer feasible, sources across San Francisco confirmed Thursday that the popular Northern California city would be shutting its doors at the end of the month due to rising rent. Residents and business owners of the iconic West Coast metropolis, which has occupied the same peninsula for generations, told reporters that spiraling costs had reached such a level that remaining in its 47-square-mile waterfront space was simply beyond its means. Additionally, city representatives conceded that it has so far been a major challenge finding a new location with the same features they?ve always enjoyed at their current spot, including its desirable outdoor space, easy access by public transit, and impressive views. http://www.theonion.com/article/repor ... rs-over-rising-rent-50634

I'm glad he got in that he wants to make this a "conversation", not a "debate". I think the issue of dislocation in urban neighborhoods is an issue that needs sensible discussion, and I respect Devyn Ma?ibo for giving it a public forum like a blog. I'm concerned that he doesn't understand the dynamics driving "gentrification" - a lot of people are moving to the very neighborhoods he talks about because they were priced out Manhattan and Brooklyn; the disruptions imposed by the concentration of wealth, instability internationally, etc. on NYC and it's satellites is never going to go away, and wanting the "good old days" back is a pipe dream.
I hope to see some suggestions come out of this for, say, infrastructure improvements that would a) provide solid working class jobs and b) take the pressure off DTJC to absorb all of the influx of newcomers.

I agree with the activist to the extent the current administration, through it's marketing campaign, is seeking to bring in more people, and that this can have effects that hurt current residents, particularly poorer residents, if other measures are not taken.
The examples he points to, however, are odd. Like the SID's, which are nearly meaningless at this point. The one thing I think he can point to is that the administration has continued large scale development downtown and is bringing it to Journal Square.

gentrification is a positive town planning application ... HOWEVER when you focus on the needs of the wealthy while ignoring or refusing to acknowledge the needs of others is nothing more then discrimination

Is this terribly different than what you would have heard 50 years ago, except it would have been Puerto Rican scum, Filipino scum, Asian scum, etc. Or 100 years ago, when it would have been Polish, Italian, Jewish, etc.

The Special Improvement Districts have been around long before Fulop was mayor. And with Christie taking UEZ funding for the budget, most of them have no funds to do anything, although the Downtown SID does have some.

Yes, let's take JC back into the shithole it once was. Might as well call this person a Flat Earth activist, they are equally moronic.
At least the good news is this "movement" has a 0% chance of doing anything.
