Pop singer opens boutique in Jersey City

For Shakti Thara, Jersey City was the culmination of all her life's travels.

Thara, a global pop singer who has performed all across the world, opened Shakti Boutique last Saturday as the cornerstone of her new life in Jersey City.

"It's a growing community," said Thara of the Heights section of Jersey City. "I moved here because it allowed me enough space to set up my studio.

Thara was born in Detroit to Singaporean and Indian immigrants, and throughout her life, the self-described "gypsy" has lived in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and Manhattan before recently settling in Jersey City.
