Companion Animal Trust and the Hudson County Animal League will host a special "All Black Kitten and Cat" adoption event on Sunday, October 27 from 12:00pm to 4:30pm at Fussy Friends Pet Supplies, located at 148 Newark Avenue in Downtown Jersey City between Grove and Erie Streets.
The event, which falls a few days before Halloween, aims to shatter the old myths and superstitions that link black cats to witches, devils, and bad luck -- Black Cat Syndrome. The cats are the ones who really have the bad luck -- these myths cause more black cats to be euthanized in shelters than non-black cats. Many cultures consider black cats to be good luck, but ever since the Pilgrims landed here, the idea of black cats being unlucky or even evil persists in the United States. The groups are trying to dispel these myths so more people will choose to adopt a black cat or kitten.
The kittens and cats at this event are all rescued from the streets of Union City, Jersey City and Bayonne. There is a $100 adoption fee which covers expenses related to spaying and neutering and vaccinations. All adopters will receive a Halloween goodie bag.
