This is too funny! Just this afternoon, while driving around, my niece pointed out to me that those white flowers smelled like fish! We started to call them "fish flowers" but I didn't actually stop to smell the, uh, flowers. Maybe that's a good thing. (Though now I'm *really* curious!)

Why do you the white blooming trees in downtown jersey city smell like fish. My husband pointed this out to me but my allergies are so bad i haven't noticed.

Tonight I was walking to the Lamp Post to get dinner and noticed the fish smell so being a moron I pulled off a flower and smelled it. Low and behold it is the trees causing the smell.

Does anyone know why or what type of tree this is?
What you smell is the unfortunate odor from a beautiful flowering tree named, Pyrus calleryana or commonly called, a pear tree. Once the flowers drop and the leaves grow, you will have a season sans fragrance until it produces fruit in the fall and you may perceive the lovely smell of cat urine?ah nature.
