A new private gallery in Jersey City is opening next week in a somewhat unexpected neighborhood, Newport.

Surmrit Gallery was founded by Surya Prakash Natrajan, a businessman and art lover, and Smrita Jain S., an artist from New Delhi, in 2010 as an online art gallery.

Next week, however, the couple is taking the leap and opening a physical gallery in Newport, a primarily residential and commercial neighborhood. While art venues are sprinkled all over JC, most are located in Downtown Jersey City, or in the specifically designated Powerhouse Arts and Riverview Arts districts (though the latter two are much less saturated). The Surmrit Gallery of Art and Design, the couple says, is the first private art gallery in their neighborhood.
