TRENTON ? One of the most mundane tasks in a society ? waiting in line to renew a driver?s license at the local motor vehicle agency ? could be avoided by older New Jersey drivers beginning Dec. 1.

Garden State drivers born on or before Dec. 1, 1964, are scheduled to begin receiving notices this month stating that they can "skip the trip" to their local MVC office and renew their licenses through the mail. Drivers with licenses expiring Nov. 30 get the first notices.

The move comes as New Jersey looks to begin phasing in new licenses under stricter federal requirements, starting with younger drivers. The nearly 3 million drivers born after Dec. 1, 1964, would be first up for the new requirements, and still have to make the tedious trip to the MVC office to pick up their licenses.
