Jersey City expected to tighten loophole in rent control laws

JERSEY CITY - The City Council is expected to vote on a new ordinance that would eliminate what housing advocates call a loophole in current rent control laws.

The updated ordinance comes after Jersey City Together, a coalition of community and religious leaders, shed light on a tactic they say is being used by landlords to exploit rent control guidelines through Section 8 vouchers.

A first reading of the ordinance will take place Wednesday.
