Charles Mainor backs out of Jersey City mayor's raceJERSEY CITY -- Former assemblyman and retired police detective Charles Mainor is dropping his bid to become Jersey City's next mayor, three weeks after suffering what he called a stroke-like event that landed him in the hospital for four days. Mainor, 50, told The Jersey Journal that he is seeking the Ward A City Council seat instead of attempting to oust Mayor Steve Fulop. Jersey City mayoral hopeful in hospital after heart episodeJERSEY CITY -- Charles Mainor, the retired police detective and former state assemblyman running to become Jersey City's next mayor, is recovering tonight after suffering a heart episode, according to sources close to Mainor. Charles Mainor, ex-assemblyman, to run for Jersey City mayor By JERSEY CITY — Voters don't head to the polls in the next Jersey City mayor's race for 354 days, but the contest now has three declared candidates. Charles Mainor, a retired police detective and former state assemblyman, told The Jersey Journal this week that he intends to challenge Mayor Steve Fulop's re-election bid next November. Mainor, 49, who was elbowed out of a fourth term in the Assembly last year, said in an interview at Larsen's Restaurant on Bergen Avenue that he's running for mayor to make sure every resident enjoys the fruits of Jersey City's renaissance.
