Jersey City councilman campaigns for Smith in Bayonne runoff election

By Mike D'Onofrio/The Jersey Journal
June 10, 2014 at 6:37 PM

As the polls in Bayonne's runoff election near closing, a Jersey City councilman was out campaigning for Mayor Mark Smith.

Khemraj "Chico" Ramchal, Jersey City's Ward B councilman, was standing outside Smith's campaign headquarters shortly before 5 p.m.

He crossed the city border, he said, in a final push to get voters to cast their ballots.

"I'm here supporting Mayor Smith," Ramchal said. "He was a big supporter of me when I was running. I stick with him no matter what.

"I know he can pull this off," he added.

Polls close at 8 p.m.

Smith, 51, is fighting for his political life as newcomer James "Jimmy" Davis, 51, challenges him for the mayor's seat. In addition, the mayoral candidates each have a slate of council candidates contending for four seats in today's runoff.

There was a noticeable uptick of campaign signs and posters plastered in front of homes and businesses on city streets.

Campaign staff for both Smith and Davis could also be seen walking up and down Broadway and the surrounding streets urging residents to vote.
