State Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham of Jersey City to seek re-election
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal January 19, 2013 at 3:01 AM State Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham announced yesterday she is seeking re-election this year to her Senate seat. The Jersey City Democrat represents the 31st Legislative District, which encompasses Jersey City and Bayonne. Her announcement will likely end talk of her jumping into May?s Jersey City mayoral race. ?There?s still a lot of work to be done in creating jobs, addressing crime issues, and improving education,? Cunningham, 62, said in a statement. ?That?s why I want to continue the progress we have made in improving the quality of life in our communities.? Cunningham, the Senate?s majority whip and chair of its Higher Education Committee, was first elected to the body in 2007. She easily won re-election in 2011. Rumors have swirled that Cunningham, widow of former mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, would enter this year?s mayoral race in Jersey City. Asked whether Cunningham?s announcement yesterday meant she is officially staying out of the city race, Cunningham aide Omar Barbour was coy. ?There is a state law precluding dual-job holding,? Barbour said. ?So infer what you?ve got to infer.? http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index ... _sandra_b_cunningham.html
