be skeptical of any bike or pedestrian initiative that Healy "announces".

They could care less - just walk or bike anywhere in JC and within 10 minutes you'll see just how dangerous it is...

Actually that isn't quite true. He's been quite detrimental to bikers by overseeing the expansion of Grand Street and Columbus Drive for high volume car traffic but without adding dedicated bicycle lanes. So while he has done virtually nothing positive, he's done quite a bit of bad things.

Don't be fooled for even a second citzens of Jersey City. This was purely lip service to get some DT votes and for "some" of us to think he cared about alternative means of transportation. Give me a break! Jerry has done virtually nothing for bikers in this town since he took office. Not one dedicated bike lane after years of studies and many 1000's spent. He wants us all on the PATH or bus and that is the end of it.

I see Fulop as a mayor who will look to other cities who embrace cycling and all its many benefits and will genuinely make some changes here.

Until then watch your backs people bucause it is a risky adventure biking on 95% of our streets.

from Next American City -

Bike to Work Week
http://americancity.org/buzz/entry/2297/

The all-inclusiveness of these rides is so important. I was speaking with Carly Berwick who volunteers with the organization Bike JC in Jersey City, NJ who noted that ?there seems to be a real hunger for informal meetings and rides?not races.? Bike JC is organizing its own ride on May 23, the Jersey City Ward Tour, that is very welcoming of all riders regardless of age or skill-level. The organization, which was only just formed in December, pulled in 75 cyclists for their first informal ride and they?ve already got over 200 signed up for the Ward Tour, including many parents like Berwick herself who is the mother of two young children.

Precisely moosamuys. Pure lip service. This quote by Healy in the Jersey Journal regarding this Bike to Work Week is so far from what he really thinks that I really can't belive he said it:

"I encourage everyone to recognize the importance of sharing our streets and highways with cyclists," Healy said. "I also invite you to participate in cycling activities to whatever extent possible during this week, including biking to work."

Everyone knows he could care less about bikers and their saftey. Public trasportation is his platfom and always will be. He has had terrific, well thought out bike plans for this city in front of him since he become mayor and did squat. Our roads are no safer for bikers, their is no dialouge between developers and the city regarding bikers and the amount of bike lock up areas in this city is abysmal. Try and find a road with any bike lane markings. All you will find is a handful of bike route signs.

Some cities really embrace biking but Jersey City fails miserably. Columbus Ave. alone could have been perfect for a lane for bikes but they failed to take advantage of that.

It took the grass roots efforts of Bike JC to finally get this to happen and for that all bikers/commuters shoud be grateful. Lets hope the next mayor REALLY cares.

They're not traditional training wheels, but any liquor store in JC has 'em. Two jugs of Carlo Rossi table wine will work.

How will this work out with the JCPA crackdown on bicycles locked to city owned sign poles, trees, and lamp posts?

Are you serious jclxz? Your comment is absurd. First of all no one I know that commutes to work with a bike is sprinting in full riding gear, working up a sweat like it's a workout. In fact, commuting with a bike to work, is really no different than walking when it comess to sweating and ones heart-rate. I am very cognisant of that when I am commuting to work. I mean who, in their right mind, would sprint to an office setting knowing full well they would end up being sweaty and uncomfortable once they are there?

As for Healy and his propossed Bike-to-Work Week: A little too late Healy, don't ya think? Year and after wasted year has gone by with countless bike-lane and bike-access studies. $1,000's spent on these studies, some from top notch universities and think-tanks only to be shelved time and time again. Now we get this litte gem for our Mayor. Laughable!

Who can possibly bike to work here that doesn't habitually walk? If it's far enough that you're biking instead of driving, you're going to need to shower and change when getting to the office. Not viable for many people. Not to mention the complete lack of safe places to bike on the streets. And if you're talking about biking to the PATH train, riding the train sweaty and smelling worse than most of the other passengers, walking the rest of your way to work to get to the shower in your cubicle (everyone has one, right), this makes a lot of sense.

And if the weather says 20% chance of rain, you can't bike to work. 5 days a week and you'll likely get rained on one of those days.

I guess that's why they're supporting it with a single bike rack(?!)[/quote]

They way the majority of people in JC drive, with running stop signs and red lights, you won't find me on a bicycle in this town.

Stop picking on Jerry he did very well when he rode a bike for the Grove Street Bicycles' grand opening/ribbon cutting photo-op.

Leave the keys at home and roll up your pants legs. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy wants you to ride your bicycle to work next week. The mayor has proclaimed next week "Jersey City Bike to Work Week" to encourage commuters to think about sustainable alternatives to automobiles. To kick off the week, a new bicycle rack, provided by the Hudson Transportation Management Association, will be unveiled Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Journal Square PATH Plaza. "Commuting by bike even one day during the week would reduce the city's carbon footprint and traffic," Healy said. "We are encouraging those who normally drive to their offices in Jersey City to get on a bike." The official kickoff is Tuesday because Monday is a furlough day for city workers. The city is also touting bike commuting's other benefits - saving money, exercise, a clean environment, and fun.
