Signs in Downtown Jersey City criticize mayor's leadership during Sandy

Some Downtown Jersey City residents are not feeling Mayor Jerramiah Healy?s leadership during Hurricane Sandy and in the massive storm?s aftermath.

At least two signs on York Street, which was badly hit by flooding, question whether Healy has been a prominent part of the city?s recovery effort.
?Where is Waldo? Healy?? reads on sign, and another reads, ?On our own again ? Thanks, Healy.?

York resident Jeff Spangler, who said he's responsible for the "on your own" sign, said the city has been unresponsive to concerns of residents in his part of the city. A fire truck did come by today to announce that school was closed until Monday, which Spangler called "a colossal waste of gas."

"There has been zero presence on this street," he said.

Jersey City residents fleeing Society Hill after five days with no power, neighbors say

Residents of Jersey City?s Society Hill section are fleeing the area after living for five days without power thanks to Hurricane Sandy, according to men who spoke to The Jersey Journal.

Kellogg Street resident Cesar Carvajal said his neighbors have been heading elsewhere in recent days, frustrated after living day after day without power.

?We?re on our own,? said Carvajal, a first responder with the Port Authority who lives in Society Hill with wife and infant son.

Society Hill, which is home to about 4,000 residents, sits on the city?s south-western edge, hugging the Hackensack River. Ground-floor residents of the section were among those forced to evacuate before Sandy hit on Monday night.

?I feel like the whole community has been abandoned by the city,? he said.

Letter: Our post-Sandy cookout warmed hearts

We did see Mayor Healy one more time that afternoon; a relief aid truck had finally arrived from the Red Cross and was situated right down the block from where our cookout was taking place. Mayor Healy could be seen posing for pictures as provisions were being handed out to residents. I do not deny that the mayor and his City Council president have a right to come into our community and meet with us, but to blatantly politicize such a tragic situation is beyond reprehensible.

Jersey City Assemblyman Sean Connors withdraws earlier endorsement of Mayor Healy's re-election bid

Citing Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy?s ?dismal performance? in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Assemblyman Sean Connors has withdrawn his support for Healy?s re-election bid.

In an emailed statement, Connors said it?s time for ?a change of leadership? in Jersey City.

Healy?s performance following Sandy was ?simply inexcusable. There were many parts of the city where the mayor never even appeared,? Connors said.
?In a crisis, a true leader must provide a strong sense that he has the situation under control. What I heard from many residents is they felt a sense of growing chaos in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, with looting in some neighborhoods.?

* I noticed during the debates that Matsikoudis says he was heavily involved in JC decision making for things like green space, development, safety, etc but when confronted on bad things such as JC?s Sandy response he says well not everything.
