Jersey City proposes zero interest for late tax payments this quarterBy JERSEY CITY — City officials are in talks to offer zero interest for two weeks to taxpayers whose undelivered August property tax bills lead to late payments. City spokesman Ryan Jacobs said the city cannot, because of state statute, extend the deadline that requires taxpayers to pay their quarterly bill by August 28. But Jacobs said a City Council measure providing zero interest to late payers would eliminate any penalty caused by undelivered tax bills. The council meets for its next regular meeting on Sept. 9, but the action would essentially be retroactive: the city does not plan to charge interest to late payers this quarter until that date, and then only if the council rejects the proposal.
