Jersey City mayoral races cost millions

When Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop unseated Jerramiah Healy in the city's 2013 mayoral race, a whopping $5.2 million was spent on the election.

However, the race only ranks 10th on a list of the state's 25 costliest municipal elections since 1974, according to a New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission study.

The election spending list released last month is adjusted for inflation.

Nine Jersey City elections appear on the list - the most of any municipality in the state - but Newark is top dog when it comes to election dollars. The four costliest municipal elections since 1974 have all featured Newark mayoral races.
