Jersey City councilman and mayoral hopeful Steven Fulop discusses education reform, accountability
Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 2:26 PM
By M.G. De Guzman / The Jersey Journal
Mayoral hopeful Councilman Steven Fulop spoke with Hudson County TV, following an information session on teacher evaluations and education in Jersey City.
During the interview, Fulop emphasized the importance of education reform advocates working with the teacher's union and the public working together despite surface-level issues.
"Education in Jersey City presents the biggest opportunity for moving the city forward. It's tied into the crime problems, it's tied into the employment issues, and changing, and reforming, and improving the schools for the entire city," Fulop said.
Fulop also discussed the tensions between Governor Christie and the NJEA regarding their differences in accountability metrics. Without taking sides, he stated his belief that a compromised solution should be reached by the year's end.
"Ultimately, any metrics that you use needs to be fair and reasonable and not unfairly put teachers in a predicament that is unreasonable."
And with election year on the horizon, Fulop found himself put on the spot regarding his plans to improve education as a mayoral candidate.
In response, Fulop readily cited the ongoing national search for a new superintendent, claiming he is looking for "the best and brightest" to come to Jersey City.
"I think that Jersey City is going to be at the forefront of not education reform not in New Jersey, but we're looking for it to be in the entire country."
