After decades of talk, road project connecting Downtown to Liberty State Park, Bergen-Laf is underway

Today 2:09 PM (8/7/2019)
By Ron Zeitlinger | The Jersey Journal

A long-planned road project that will connect Downtown Jersey City with Liberty State Park and the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood is finally underway.

Jersey Avenue, which ends at the Ethel Pesin Footbridge over the Mill Creek in the northwest area of the park, will be extended over the canal and connect to Phillip Street, city officials said.

The total cost of the project ? which has been discussed for decades and has been in the planning stages since 2013 ? is expected to be $13 million, with the state Department of Transportation paying $10 million of the cost, city officials said. The project is expected to be completed by December 2021.
