That video is a sad indictment on the state of civility in our city. Adults standing by as kids engage in fighting, some of them even egging them on, or partaking. Kids acting like that is just disappointing, but the behavior of the adults is even more reprehensible. The realist in me shakes his head and mutters something along the lines of "this is why we can't have nice things" and "yeah, not surprised at all". The city can't just throw a park in the middle of that neighborhood and expect it to work out dandily without supervision and/or constant patrols. This is not the first incident in the park for this Summer, and it will not be the last. The city ought to really evaluate the situation and come up with some measures to prevent more issues. Why spend all that money and let it all go to waste? There has to be a longer, more consistent commitment to the park than just the initial photo-op from its inauguration.

The above link is of a Facebook video of what really happened. Seems like the victims (or at least one) were the ones jumping another girl and got stabbed by a family member of the girl they jumped.

Here it is again - is this fear of reprisals, distrust for Police, a sense that there is no justice, or all of the above?

JERSEY CITY -- A woman was struck by a car Saturday night while trying to cross Garfield Avenue to help her niece who was stabbed during a fight at Berry Lane Park, authorities said.

Two girls, ages 14 and 15, were stabbed during the assault and their injuries are not considered life threatening, according to a police report.

At about 9 p.m., police were called to the park on reports of a stabbing and "large group fighting." Officers found a 14-year-old girl on the sidewalk near the sprinklers with a stab wounds to her upper arm and wrist, the report states.

JERSEY CITY - A teen girl was stabbed at the city's largest municipal park Saturday night, sources with knowledge of the investigation said.

The 14-year-old girl suffered stab wounds to her wrist and arm near the sprinklers at Berry Lane Park sometime after 9 p.m., police sources said.

Her mother was at the park when she was stabbed and the suspect is believed to be an adult, according to the sources.
