18 months in prison for former chief of Jersey City Head StartThe former executive director of Jersey City Head Start, who used the program as his personal piggy bank from the moment he took the job, was sentenced today to 18 months in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Robert E. Mays, 40, of Jersey City, was also sentenced by U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton in Newark to three years of supervised release and must pay restitution of $257,418. Mays pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud on June 7, 2016. Mays took over as head of the Jersey City Child Development Centers Inc. Man admits taking $250K from Head Start; bought Maserati, mink coat By NEWARK — The former executive director of a former Head Start program in Jersey City Tuesday admitted that he diverted more than $250,000 from programs for underprivileged children and used the money for personal expenses, including a Maserati and a mink coat, prosecutors said. Robert E. Mays, 38, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton in federal court to one count of wire fraud.  Robert E. Mays was also arrested for domestic violence and kicked off Bruce Alston's campaign (as his - gasp - treasurer) as a result.
Source Article Interesting to read the comments from 7/15 which indicated that Mays was already known to be an embezzler for a much larger sum in May of 2014: "July 21, 2015 8:59 AM JohnnyBGood writes: Wait, he was treasurer? So he's terminated from JCBOE in April of 2013 for "conduct incapacity, unbecoming conduct, and neglect of duty against respondent" and he's still hired as an Executive Director of a child-centric organization. This guy had been fired from Snyder HS as dean of students and he managed to land this plum job? I wonder who he knows. Anyway, I'm sure he's sent his resume to McGreevey already.
