New Year's tragedy: Jersey City man, 22, dies when car plunges into water off Liberty State Park

A Jersey City family had celebrated their New Year's at home watching the countdown and were saving the Champagne bottle for early Wednesday when they would all toast with their son, who was out celebrating with friends.
But 22-year-old Mark Pych never made it home.

Instead, early this morning, his distraught parents and sister waited in the parking lot of Surf City on Marin Boulevard after Jersey City police had knocked on their door at 6 a.m. to tell them that their son was involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident.

The Pych family from Jersey City stood only a hundred feet away from where a dozen police cars are still parked near the marina dock at Liberty View Drive, near Liberty State Park, to see for themselves if the nightmare of losing one of their own was true.

"He was going to meet his friends to celebrate the New Year's," 17-year-old Bernadette told The Jersey Journal.

Before Mark Pych left to celebrate the New Year's with his friends his sister recalled the last moment she had with him.

"We were just playing Fun Run on our phones last night," she said in disbelief. "He loved to make jokes and he was peaceful."
Around 3:30 this morning, Pych's car plunged into the waters at the end of Marin Boulevard, Jersey City police and fire spokesman Bob McHugh said.

"An individual drove off the end of the marina, through the barriers," he said.

Divers with the New York Police Department found the car and recovered Pych's body, he said.

McHugh confirmed that initial reports of multiple people in the vehicle were not accurate.

"A security guard had reported seeing multiple people in the car but that's not the case," he saidsaid McHugh. "There was only one person in the vehicle."

A U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers crane has just arrived at the scene to remove the vehicle from the water.
Jersey City police divers will attach cables to the car and it will be lifted out of the water, McHugh said.

Wieslay Pych, Mark's father, said his son had just graduated from Rutgers Newark with a degree in business.

"He was going to start looking for work in January," he said.
