Jersey City School 38 is mourning math teacher killed Wednesday in four-car crash on Route 7

Students and staff at School 38 in Jersey City are heart broken over the death of Karen Augustine, a 59-year-old math teacher killed Wednesday night in a four-car crash on Route 7 in Kearny.

?It was tough opening up the school day,? principal Sandra Jones said yesterday. ?The eighth-graders were moved to tears. The seventh-graders were in shock . . . The teachers were devastated.?

Several students and teachers sought out counselors who were available at the school, Jones said.

An eighth-grade math teacher, Augustine had been teaching an extended-day program since January, preparing students for the standardized test, which was administered yesterday. A resident of North Arlington, Augustine died shortly after the final test-preparation class, Jones said.

The accident occurred at 5:39 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said Augustine, driving a BMW, was traveling west and was rear-ended by another vehicle, and that she lost control of her car, which veered into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes.

Augustine was rushed to Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, where she died from injuries sustained during the crash, Kearny police said.

Ms. Augustine was my daughter?s 8th grade math teacher at PS # 38. She was an excellent teacher and a caring person.

(sad news that road is a death road, she was probably stuck in the long line of 5 pm traffic on the down side of one of the steep hills and the guy came over the top and down into her pushing her car into oncoming traffic)

The North Arlington woman and Jersey City school teacher who died last night from injuries sustained in a four-car crash on Route 7 in Kearny has been identified as Karen Augustine, Kearny police said this morning.

Augustine, 59, was rushed to Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, where she died shortly after the 5:45 p.m. accident.

Augustine is an 8th-grade math teacher at School 38 in Jersey City, school officials have confirmed.

Police said three other people were injured in the accident, which occurred when Augustine's BMW was rear-ended while she was traveling west on Route 7, also known as the Belleville Turnpike. Augustine's BMW was thrown into the east-bound lanes, where her car sideswiped one vehicle and then hit an SUV head-on, police said.

The driver of the car that rear-ended Augustine's car, a 71-year-old Glen Ridge man, was not injured in the accident, police said, adding that he has not been charged. The accident is still under investigation, police said.
