Jersey City man to undergo psych test after assaulting woman, biting one cop and hitting another, police say
Published: Tuesday, November 01, 2011, 12:14 By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal A Jersey City man will begin psychological evaluation today after punching a woman in the face during a robbery, trying to take the gun of a responding police officer, and attacking Jersey City Medical Center staff Monday morning. Anwar Gayed, 33, of Glenwood Avenue, was arrested at Warren and First streets and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, attempting to disarm a police officer, robbery, burglary, resisting arrest and simple assault, reports said. At 8:05 a.m. a 33-year-old Warren Street woman was removing items from her car trunk when Gayed jumped into her back seat and began taking things, reports said. The woman said "What are you doing?" and Gayed got out and punched her in the face, reports said. A friend came to the woman's aid and Gayed took a swing at him but missed, reports said, adding that the man then punched Gayed in the face. Gayed fell, striking his face on the pavement, and was still down when a police arrived but he jumped up, grabbed the cop around the waist and tried to get his gun, reports said. During the struggle Gayed bit the officer's hand, breaking the skin, and the cop punched Gayed in the face and eventually subdued him, reports said. When Gayed's handcuffs were taken off at the hospital so his vital signs could be checked, he tried to bite a security guard and punched a police officer in the face before again being subdued, reports said. Gayed has been at the Medical Center since his arrest, but is to be taken to the Ann Klein state psychiatric hospital in Trenton today for further evaluation. Police say they suspect Gayed in another incident minutes early at a construction site at First and Provost streets, where a worker saw someone peering into his vehicle, reports said. "What are you doing," the worker asked, reports said, adding that the man replied "Come here. You don't understand me," before smashing the windshield.
