JERSEY CITY ? A Light Rail train traveling on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line struck a 2-year-old child at about 5 p.m. Wednesday near Essex and Greene streets in Downtown Jersey City, NJ Transit officials said.

"It was traveling at a slow rate of speed when, unfortunately, two young children ran out in front of the Light Rail vehicle," NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett-Hackett said. "And the vehicle came into contact with one of the kids."

The child was treated at the scene and released, said Bassett-Hackett, who added that no other injuries were reported.
