I think the data is for 2009 - look at the link at lower left for the county - JC's pattern is the same. A bit confusing since the map itself has a 2012 copyright.

Jersey City touts lowest number of homicides since 1969

The number of homicides in Jersey City dropped 28 percent last year to a more than four-decade low, city officials announced yesterday.

There were 13 homicides in Jersey City in 2012, five fewer than in 2011, officials said. That?s the lowest number of homicides since 1969, they said.

In a statement, Mayor Jerramiah Healy said the city is "obviously pleased" to see decreases in any category, but especially when it comes to homicides.

?However, each and every single homicide is one homicide too many in our city, and I know the brave men and women of our police department will continue to work diligently to keep the trend in a declining pattern," Healy said.

About one year ago, residents descended on the City Council and accused city officials ignoring crime. As a result, Healy and Police Chief Tom Comey held a series of town-hall meetings to address public-safety issues.

There were 33 homicides in Jersey City in 1969, while the peak number was 49 in 1979, according to the city.

?As the criminal element has become more and more creative, let?s say, in their efforts to sell illegal drugs and use handguns to protect their trade, we?ve had to do things differently to offset their success, to which we believe has had a direct impact on the number of homicides in our community,? Comey said in a statement.

City officials attributed last year?s homicide decline to a ?significant effort? to reduce street violence, saying initiatives like Operation Summer Shield, which led to more than 200 arrests, helped eliminate crime like never before.JJ

That?s a great map, the descriptions are interesting! I forgot about a lot of them. Scary!!

I think the JCPD website left off the 3 ?justified homicides by police? in July 2009. (the two losers in the tragic Officer DiNardo death and the shooting of the person who missed her meds) They also seem to be missing some hit and run traffic deaths.

It has ALL crime in JC by month/by district - also citywide. (Jan - Oct 2009 : 19 Homicides) (not bad for a city of 240K) Newark had 77 Homicides in 2009 , pop. around 250K
Never go off that site when it comes to Homicides for the last few years many get left out. You would assume the numbers are right because it is a police website but that assumption is wrong. For 2009, 30 Homicides took place in Jersey City. From Jan-Oct the total should actually be 24 not 19.
