Man in 2017 crash that killed Jersey City firefighter could be tried again for aggravated manslaughter: court

A Jersey City man whose aggravated manslaughter trial ended in a mistrial because of an epic blood evidence error may stand trial again for the 2017 fatal crash that killed a city firefighter, an appellate court ruled.

Stephen Zadroga was behind the wheel in head-on collision on Paterson Plank Road on Nov. 16, 2017, that left multiple people injured and his friend, 29-year-old Matthew Nierstedt dead.

JERSEY CITY - The 29-year-old off-duty firefighter killed in an early morning crash died two days before he was set to take his promotional test to become a captain with the Jersey City Fire Department.

Matthew Nierstedt, a decorated veteran with the U.S. Navy, was the backseat passenger in a vehicle involved in a two-car crash on Paterson Plank Road near Congress Street. He left his home at some point Wednesday evening to drop off donations for the fire department's holiday to drive.

By Caitlin Mota The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY - The firefighter killed in a violent early morning car collision today was a U.S. Navy veteran who joined the fire department last year.

Matthew Nierstedt was a passenger in a vehicle involved in the head-on collision near Congress Street and Paterson Plank Road at about 2 a.m. Sources say at least one of the drivers was seriously injured.

Nierstedt was sworn in as a firefighter on Nov. 16, 2016. He was among a unique class of 19 firefighters who all served in the military and were trained as emergency medical technicians.
