A fender bender at an intersection in Jersey City Tuesday night turned violent when a group from one car chased, assaulted and carjacked the driver of the other vehicle, police said.

A 27-year-old Jersey City man told police he was making a right turn at Jordan Avenue and Montgomery Street when he was involved in an accident. When he pulled over, people from the other car tried to open his door, police said.

Frightened, the man drove away, and he stopped a short time later after being followed by the driver of the other car, police said. The man told police he got out to talk to the people in the other car, and said "Do you want me to call the police?"

At that point he was assaulted by two men and a woman from the other car, who then went through his pockets and stole his wallet, police said. The assailants then threatened to kill the man's family if he called the police, according to a police report.

The victim fled, but was caught by the group, who continued the assault and snatched the man's keys and drove off in his car, police said. Police located both vehicles and one the men they believe was involved in the attack.
