Jersey City man charged with bias intimidation and harassment after incident outside Hudson County Community College

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

A 30-year-old Jersey City man was charged in a bias attack on a Hudson County Community College student Tuesday night, reports said.

The student told police she was smoking in front of an HCCC building at 81-82 Sip Ave. at around 7 p.m. when a fellow student she recognized - Argha Raha of Kennedy Boulevard - asked her for a cigarette, reports said.

Raha appeared drunk to the victim and when she refused to give him a cigarette, he shoved her, called her a derogatory term and cursed at her, reports said.

While swinging at her with a "closed fist" Raha shouted "You think you're a man, come fight like one" and "gay b--," reports said.

The woman went inside the school building to call police and Raha entered the lobby of nearby 26 Journal Square, where, according to a security guard there, Raha has an attorney, reports said.

Raha was allowed to take an elevator to go to his attorney's office, but when police entered the building looking for him, the guard locked down all the elevators except one, reports said.

When Raha returned to the ground floor and saw the cops, he started spitting at them and yelling "You're always trying to be a cop," reports said.

Raha was charged with harassment and bias intimidation, reports said.
