The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy?s Thirteenth Annual Preservation Awards Ceremony will take place next Thursday evening, May 30th at the Landmark Loew?s Jersey Theater at 54 Journal Square.
The Conservancy is an organization founded to preserve, protect, and promote Jersey City's architectural and cultural heritage. The ceremony will honor those who have contributed to the cause of preservation in Jersey City. Categories include the Excellence in Preservation Award, the Theodore Conrad Preservationist Award, the J. Owen Grundy History Award, the Preservation Initiative Award, and the Jersey City Legend Award. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM at the Landmark Loew?s Jersey Theater at 54 Journal Square. The cost is $30.00. A buffet dinner featuring food from several local restaurants will be served. A tour of the historic Loews Jersey Theatre (www.loewsjersey.org) will follow the ceremony. Tickets may be purchased at the Loew?s Jersey on the day of the event or by contacting Conservancy president John Hallanan at jclandmarks@gmail or 201-456-0486.

The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy is proud to announce its Tenth Annual Preservation Award winners:
J. OWEN GRUNDY HISTORY AWARD To Bob Leach, Director of the Jersey City Historical Project for his contribution to the oral history tradition of Jersey City. JERSEY CITY LEGEND AWARD To local author and historian Dr. Barbara B. Petrick, Ph.D. EXCELLENCE IN PRESERVATION To the Jersey City Free Public Library for the restoration of the Greenville Branch of the Public Library. To Robert Martin & Co, developers of Dixon Mills for their restoration of the Dixon Ticonderoga Furnace House. To Jean Louie Danis & Zorana Danis, owners of 352-354 Arlington Avenue for the restoration of their home. PRESERVATION INITIATIVE AWARD To the Jersey City Housing Authority for the creation of sensitively designed federally funded housing throughout Jersey City. THEODORE CONRAD AWARD To Rob Crow and the Village Neighborhood Association (VNA) for their spirited grassroots efforts to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of the Italian Village district of Downtown Jersey City. The ceremony honoring the winners will take place this Thursday, May 27th. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM at the landmark Loew?s Jersey Theater in Journal Square. The cost is $25.00. Tickets may be purchased at the Loew?s Jersey on the day of the event. A buffet dinner featuring fare from several local restaurants including Liberty House, Komagashi, Parmigiana House & Monteleone?s Bakery will be served. The Larry Banks Jazz Ensemble will provide entertainment. A tour of the historic Loews Jersey Theatre will follow the ceremony.

On Thursday, May 27, 2010, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy will proudly present its tenth annual Preservation Awards Ceremony in honor of those who have significantly contributed to the preservation of Jersey City's architectural and cultural heritage at the landmark Loew's Jersey Theater in Journal square.
Categories include the Excellence in Preservation Award, the Theodore Conrad Preservationist Award, the J. Owen Grundy History Award, the Preservation Initiative Award, and the Jersey City Legend Award. A tour of the historic Loew?s Jersey Theatre will follow the ceremony. Refreshments will be served. $25 at the door.

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 15th join JCLC President John Hallanan on a walking tour through Bergen Square -New Jersey's first permanent European settlement, dating back 350 years.
Meet 12 noon at the Journal Square PATH station, by the Jackie Robinson statue. Tour finishes around 2 PM. FREE! Then on Sunday, join former JCLC President Joshua Parkhurst on a walking tour of Jersey City's Italian Village. Learn how the once-prominent (and still present) Italian population established this community in the late-19th century, transforming it into a cultural and political force; meet both the long-time and newly established merchants who are helping to drive the Village's resurgence. The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy and the Hudson County Office of Cultural Affairs & Tourism continue Preservation Month 2010 with an exclusive tour of Jersey City?s beaux-arts masterpiece, the Justice William J. Brennan Courthouse. The tour will begin at 11:00 AM, this Saturday May 8 2010. The tour will be led by Bill LaRosa, Hudson County?s Director of Cultural Affairs. Highlights will include the magnificent lobby, rotunda, and courtrooms featuring the works of muralists Edwin H. Blashfield, Charles Yardley Turner, Kenyon Cox, and Howard Pyle. Meet in the Brennan Courthouse lobby, 575-583 Newark Avenue at Newark and Baldwin Avenues. The tour is FREE. Rain or Shine!
