Thank you so much!

Totally up my alley, and I appreciate both Todd Barry and Borscht Belt comedy.

Why is this not sold out already?

Super excited, thanks for posting it here.

If you haven't voted, please do. Voting ends 9/3.

We made it to #56, and still have a chance to crack Top 20, but that window is narrowing.

Why is McNair "more deserving" than other JC schools of the money?

One simple answer is BECAUSE we meet AYP, we do not qualify for Title 1 money the way other JCPS do.

In fact, I was shown some numbers that show our operating budget was steadily reduced by about 40% cumulatively since 2004, while our enrollment increased by about 150 students (not Special Ed, within McNair Academic itself).

And, we have gone to open enrollment on APs, increasing those numbers (including paying roughly $5k per head for kids to take Rutgers ITV classes). AND we pay for PSAT testing each year for every kid.

We have NO money.

When we were fiscally good and came in under budget, the good folks at Central Office swept in and took our (very modest) surplus right out of our account without telling us.

You know, money that we had earmarked for yummy things like replacing torn up copies of Orwell's _1984_. Or, you know, toner for printers. They absorbed it back into their budget.

Millions (I don't know numbers off the top of my head), I want to say at least $2 million, but I think it was actually closer to $4 million, went to ONE of the other high schools to help them meet AYP.

Oh, yeah, and by the way, the NJ MONTHLY ranking came out.... #2 again.

But, unfortunately, feels like a hollow victory, as very few people in this city or District seek to truly understand MAHS and are quick to take shots at us, put words in our mouth, or think they know the different challenges we face to produce the grads that we do.

The only time I've seen Dr. Epps in the building was when he was on a stage.

So, please, we could use your vote.

Search "Dr Ronald Mc Nair Acad HS" on the Kohl's Care's page.

The ones from gate 51 at Port Authority?

The last one used to be at midnight, but now I think is 1 AM.

The 99s does run 24-hrs but only once an hourish or less after 2 AM, and it is in the lower level of the PA building alongside 42nd St.

There is also Let's Celebrate which operates a soup kitchen that accepts volunteers:

Because gentrification is so obviously the best, most desired form of urban development, of course.

Diversity - ha. When it's upper-middle class and welcoming of you. Otherwise, you blame, fear and misunderstand it.

And the low-life ignorant locals who ran this city into the ground were just begging for the yuppie invasion to come save them. (Obvious ironic tone- I am one of those locals.)

And, the new transplants, for the most part, who focus their considerable education, talents, incomes and organizing power towards the desires of their immediate community (parks, reservoirs, public schools in their area, dog runs), shouldn't be surprised when, as a previous poster said, "the chickens come home to roost."

Downtown made itself an island, and kicked out the natives to do it.

Some people do want to integrate into the community, and I hope they keep that spirit up. Earnest, open coalitions on both sides are welcome and will be what transforms this city.

Not clueless "Sixth Borough" parasites, vampires that want to use Jersey City as a cheap crash pad or a "hot nabe."

Ditto to PubliusIII hitting salient points on the head.

Thanks to those who posted info on the vigil. Student at McNair (where I teach) were also planning a vigil at the same time, so there will be a turnout, definitely, from the school community.

The students have posted a piece of oak tag in the hallway and students are writing messages to Mr. Parikh and his family. These are hard lessons for young people to learn, but Mr. Parikh's kindness and connection to the students is his legacy, and is perhaps the best character education they, all of us, could have received.

The students are collecting funds internally (the response has been tremendous) and will give the money to the family (some of our staff members were serving as interpreters between the Parikh family and police yesterday, so there is contact).

If you'd truly like to contribute and don't have any way to do it, if you send something (I'd say money order might be safe?) in care of Principal Edward Slattery 123 Coles St. JC NJ 07302 with an explanatory note, we can be sure to forward it.
