Groove on Grove has gone thru many changes since starting in 2008. The stage was moved 2 years ago to its current location because of the noise complaints coming from Grove Pointe Condo owners. This move helped that situation. The placement of the bike racks was done with the approval of Public Works but they are now slated to be moved next to Duane Reade ....when is a good question, since this has been a discussion with Planning and other city agencies for over a year now. The racks were put in last spring and have been the subject of much discussion since their placement. But they in no way have hindered the events that go on at the plaza, they do pose some issues to pedestrians just trying to get to that next appointment. The fact is, not everyone will be happy with what is done....but the vast majority enjoy the events....which was proven last night at the biggest Groove on Grove kick off event since it started 6 years ago. Over 300 people were there at any given moment, so I think, despite the complaints here and there, this event was and remains a success.

Did you attend our 1st or 2nd Annual All About Downtown Street Fair? Did you enjoy yourself? Well, now we need your help to keep this event alive! In 2010 our matching UEZ funds were frozen leaving us to fend for ourselves. With our amazing sponsors, we have been able to continue our events. However, our All About Downtown Street Fair is our most expensive and largest endeavor. We need any help that any one can give us to keep this event alive and keep our Downtown thriving! Any amount will help....but most of all, share this with all of your friends and family so that we may continue to make Jersey City a better place to live, work and visit! Click on this link if you want to support the Street Fair: http://www.gofundme.com/1uuyio

With your help, we can make this year the best year yet!!

PostNet has to be one of the most convenient places to go around here to mail packages, buy stamps, make copies...etc.etc. The list goes on... The staff is always very helpful to everyone, and I've been in there when it's been packed! I think that everyone has bad days, and maybe you, sillyscorp, may have caught him on a bad day...although perhaps it was you that was having the bad day. Being a small business owner is tough enough without having to defend your actions on a local blog. The fact remains that if you don't feel that they are worthy of your dollar there are dozens of other places that you can go to.

I would call the Division of Planning to find out. The HDSID does not extend to Exchange Place, so I'm unsure why the racks there are being blocked.

This is like some lame blonde joke !

How many organizations does it take to install a bike rack ?

As annoying as it is, because City Planning was not involved in the placement of the racks, they too are getting involved to figure out better locations for the racks. It's unfortunate, but the more organizations that get involved, especially with something like this that requires some planning to execute, the better. Since Planning wasn't involved from the get go, now the racks are likely to be relocated else where in the plaza.

the racks were sorely needed and more at Grove St. PATH and elsewhere. However the location of the racks is devoid of any common sense, obstructing use of the plaza, pedestrian flow and accessing the PATH and likely without any legal authority or approvals within the redevelopment plan that created the plaza.

so, the answer is not enough were involved or the right people/organizations were not involved. ie. the neighboring community or city planning (damn, I have not said that in a while.)

The racks are likely to be moved elsewhere in the plaza as City Planning has gotten involved as well as the Harsimus Cove NA. In the mean time, at least they are there to save some of those trees that everyone insists on tying their bikes to.

The plaza is actually a public City park. Grove Pointe agreed with the City to redo the park and maintain it, but it is still a public park. So any events that happen there are happening in a public space.

Re: Newark Avenue StreetScape

The first thing I'd like to address is the tree issue. Most of you probably don't know, but most of Newark Ave's sidewalks (from Grove to Barrow) have vaults underneath them. This prohibited the City from utilizing cobblestone or any other material that would be heavier than the sidewalk that is there now. I agree, the sidewalks could have been done better, even with the restrictions..but that is beside the point. These vaults don't allow for trees to be planted along Newark Ave. which is why planters were placed there with trees that were appropriate for an urban setting. Originally the pots were supposed to measure 4ft in diameter, but at that size, they would have taken too much room up on the side walks, so they sized them down to 3ft.
As for the closing of the Newark Ave from Barrow to Grove, that is still something that is being tossed around amongst the business owners on that block and the City. Business owners are nervous that it will have a negative impact on their businesses, however, more are getting on board with the idea of at least trying it out on weekends.
I get that things could have been done better with the Streetscape plan...everything has room for improvement. But I think the reason things still look so bleak down there is because of the stupid gates on the businesses. I don't know about you guys, but those gates make me feel uneasy. They are unnecessary now and I think if we could get business owners to at least try it out, you would be able to look into store fronts even when they are closed and it would not be like walking down the street in an Eastern block country.

The loss of trees is unfortunate. But the fact is that many of the trees here in JC are overgrown and are diseased because they are not meant to be in the city. Parks and Forestry usually tries to replace any tree cut down with something that is more appropriate for the area. They don't always do it, but it is their goal.
