Re: Maniac drivers who speed through crosswalks (and stop signs)

It happens in downtown Jersey City too especially along Newark Avenue between Jersey Ave and Grove Street. These same hoodlums and aggressive drivers simply ignore traffic lights, stop signs and crosswalks. I have to wonder how they passed their driver's (i.e., written and road) test.

I, too, have stopped at cross walks only to have the car behind me blow its horn or receive unwelcomed and unnecessary vulgar hand jestures. And one of the cars simply went around me because the driver could not wait.

I am under the impression that the speed limit, inner city, is 25 mph. The jitny buses, metro buses and other drivers exceed this limit by a long shot. Any idea why the speed limit isn't enforced on Newark Avenue?

Suggested Solutions
I came from Boston and the police would place the "Pedestrian's have the right of way" signage in the middle of the road. Perhaps Jersey City Police should place the signage in the middle of the road too. In addition to the signage, the police should also regulate the would be offenders who do not stop at the crosswalks or stop signs.

If the Shoe Fits
The same can be said for the would be pedestrian offenders. Listen up: If the signal is red, you don't walk. Period. If the signal is green, you have the right of way. Enough said.

Used Cooking Oil Spill on Newark Avenue btw Barrows and Grove Street
#2

This afternoon on my way to Brick Haus on the corner of Barrows and Newark, I noticed that Newark Avenue between Barrows and Grove Street was completely blocked off by the police. I was and am concerned since I am a resident nearby and asked the local police (i.e., car #2997) what was the problem. He quipped by stating, "Do you have a problem?" I walked away.

I simply asked a concerned question just like any other normal resident would regarding the circumstances. Why is it that the police officers in Jersey City have so much attitude?

From word of mouth, I found out the reason for the closure of the road. It appears, Skinner's Loft allegedly dumped used cooking oil onto Newark Avenue.

Does anyone have additional information regarding this nuisance? I would appreciate it if I was cognizant of all the facts. Thank you.

Thousand Dollar Question
Who is going to pay for this debacle?

Grove Street Explosion

A 1 PM explosion occurred in front of the Subway and GNC stores. The explosion shook the ground setting off car alarms. A second later a cloud of smoke emerged from the grate. All the while, people looked aimlessly around for clues and the police. Most were perplexed and waited for the help to arrive.

Five minutes later, we heard the first of five or 6 fire sirens in the distant to arrive at the site. Thank goodness for our Homeland Security ... looks like money well spent.

We think it is most likely a transformer explosion, but it would be nice to know what exactly happened. Any one with information, please post. Thanks.

I can't believe it. By the way things are progressing, it looks like the whole building will be removed by morning. I can't get Comcast to fix my cable for two weeks and they can complete a demolition 24 hours after an unexpected fire? I need better connections!

I sense arson. On a different note: I wonder what the structural integrity of the other buildings are. Will they have to tear down the other buildings too?

I must admit how surprised I am to see the whole building completely demolished. Someone's pocketing some serious moola.

I'm guessing I will not get any rest tonight either since the street is completely blocked off from Barrow to Grove Street along Newark Avenue. There are large semi-dump trucks waiting to be filled. Oh, boy!

Ah, the joy of living in Jersey City. From the emergency drilling two weeks ago, the ruffians playing their car stereos to intolerable levels, and finally to the dump drucks outside my bedroom window off Newark Avenue. WTF!! What's next?

141 Newark Avenue

At approximately 1:20 AM, between 5 and 7 fire engines respond to a fire located on Newark Avenue and Christopher Columbus between Barrow Street and Grove Street.

Why are empty loft buildings on Newark Avenue constantly burning down? My partner and I have witnessed two infernos from our top floor window in the past two years. I guess those "lofts for sale" that were never actually for sale when you called the owner are off the market at this point.
