Quote:
when you say "cut down the trees," how many trees are we talking here? 'cause to me, trees make a park.

They are Honey Locust trees planted in 1974 when the current park was constructed. Unfortunately, we were already informed by the city that in their opinion the trees have overgrown the space, and the root systems are in extremely poor condition. They were planning on removing them regardless of any redesign of the park.

If anyone knows me, and the commitment the VNA has to trees, they'd know if it were up to us we would have kept ALL of them. We are hoping for a compromise which would leave one of the existing trees, but the city feels they are too much of a safety concern. Trust me, we're trying. Regardless of the outcome, all of the current design proposals have a generous amount of new trees.

Having reviewed the proposals, the design firms have done an AMAZING job at addressing the concerns related to the park's location. They've taken into account the park's checkered past, and steps are being taken to prevent history from repeating itself. The success of the park will be directly related to the form and functionality of its design. Stop by Tuesday to our monthly meeting to review the designs and provide feedback. This is your opportunity to be a part of the future of the park. Hope to see everyone there.

DanL, thanks for the shout-out.

I couldn't agree more with those interested in including The Village area (Coles Street to west past Brunswick Street) in the redevelopment and beautification of Newark Avenue.

In fact, at this Tuesday's Village Neighborhood Association meeting, both Robert Cotter, Director, Division of City Planning, and Councilman Steven Fulop will be on hand to address this very issue, and how it impacts adjacent neighborhoods, such as The Village.

I urge those with similar concerns to attend Tuesday's meeting.

Sorry Jaah37 to hear that you are having such difficulty contacting The Village Neighborhood Association. Our email seems to be working just fine, and I've received emails from other readers of this thread (Thanks to all of you). One possibility for your troubles is that when you click on the link in the earlier post to send an email, the period at the end of the sentence is included. Make sure you remove any extraneous punctuation.

If your email continues to kick back, I apologize. Information regarding our next meeting is included below:

Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 7pm

I would like to thank everyone who reached out to me via email, and those that accepted my invitation to attend The Village Neighborhood Association's monthly meeting last night. I would also like to thank Lt. Alvarez from the east district police department, Councilman Fulop, and the owners of both The Latin Lounge and The Lamp Post for attending as well. Last night was an important first step in making our neighborhood a safer place to live.

As posted by GrovePath, the suspect did turn himself in to police yesterday. Unfortunately, We also learned last night that he posted bail shortly thereafter.

JCList serves an important function in elevating specific neighborhood issues into the citywide dialogue. I credit this forum for giving our association the means to reach all those involved in this matter.

On another note, I echo SalOnTheHill's post regarding The Village. I would also like to add that the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy hosts an incredible walking tour of The Village most springs, I strongly urge everyone to attend.

WOW08 and bren12:

I thought I was pretty clear that "I was told" by bystanders what happened. That's my fact. You'd might want to re-read my post.

At this point, I actually miss Rivera's, and I still maintain a perceivable difference in the two atmospheres.

And no, I don't have a "personal" issue with the Latin Lounge. If it was a Lamp Post issue, then it would be a Lamp Post issue. This time, it is not.

Can we please keep in mind that the victim is actually the man in the hospital, and not the bar. Our job at this point should be to take any measure possible to keep this from happening again.

WOW08 and bren12, I encourage you (and anyone else interested in this matter) to please attend our meeting tonight, and we can discuss this further. A representative from the police department will be there to provide us with the "facts" thus far. (See previous post for details)

Back to work.

Some facts:

Fact: I moved to this block well before the Latin Lounge opened, and have witnessed first-hand the bar's negative effects on the neighborhood.
Fact: I was there shortly after the incident.
Fact: I spoke to several eye witnesses.
Fact: They told me they came out of the Latin Lounge after 3am
Fact: They told me the bouncer and the two men (not employees) were "kicking the shit out of the driver. Three against one. Then the driver ran them over."

Those are MY facts.

I'm not sure why people are taking such an odd stance in defending the bar. Our association is simply trying to make this neighborhood a safer place to live.

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm sure the police will catch this guy. I'm hoping we'll learn more about what happened, and how it can be prevented in the future.

Don't assume everything printed in the newspaper is fact.

First, I was on the scene shortly after the incident, and a few bystanders mentioned that people were coming in and out of the bar. Sounds "open" to me.

Second, according to the presentation at last night Captain's Meeting (Jersey City Police Department, East District), the injuries suffered by the man were not "life-threatening" as mentioned in the article. We were told he is doing much better. Something we can all agree on is good news.

The main issue is the fact that The Latin Lounge was open past closing. This bar is constant struggle with our neighborhood, and a source for many discussions with our neighborhood association. As acting president of The Village Neighborhood Association, I feel it would be appropriate to take this opportunity to recommend that any concerned citizens regarding this incident attend our monthly meeting this Thursday evening. The police will be on hand with more details.

I am certain that the police will apprehend this guy, and soon. But again, the responsibility rests solely on the Latin Lounge for harboring this activity and staying open past closing.

This is not new.

If you live in the Village (west side of Coles Street-Merseles Street/Sixth Street-Christopher Columbus) and want more information please email me at info@jcvillage.org

I've passed DanL's post on to the entire Village Block Association's email list and urged them to get involved. I know this amendment would greatly impact our area of the city and it must be defeated. Who cares if you're against it because it makes it unsafe for children and the elderly, or because it would be just plain ugly. What's the difference. Both are valid.

Steve:

I agree totally with carrying the streetscape further down Newark to Brunswick. There are so many businesses down here, without question more than on Christopher Columbus.

To end the street scape short of Brunswick gives the impression that The Village is not part of downtown, which it most certainly is. When approaching downtown via Newark, The Village acts as the gateway.

In the other parts of the city, Central Ave. in particular, The consistent street scape seems to go on for miles. We're only talking about a few more blocks.

I echo others on this post by saying, thanks for including us in the process. Keep up the good work.
