I don't understand the excitement ---- the opening post reads that it was a warning and not an actual summons with a fine.

Take the warning for its designated purpose ---- which in your case means making sure your neighbor's sh*t stays as far away from your property line as possible, so as to hopefully avoid this in the future. These are the perils of living in close proximity. I've had to move my neighbor's crap more times than I can recount.

I did nothing wrong. Nothing. What your saying is that it's my job to make sure the my neighbors don't leave stuff on their property that might be mistaken for mine? That way i dont get fined when the City f**ks up?

Stuff that! The City needs to hire people with an IQ to the level that they can figure out property boundaries. Those that fail to issue correct tickets should simply be fired for incompetance, wasting the cities time and wasting the taxpayers time.

PS: J Marly, badge number 6030. I have photograhphic evidence to prove the warning you issued to me is wrong and, at best, sloppy work on your part.

I will do everything in my power to make sure you don't issue false and ill-considered tickets. You're on notice and take more care with the tickets you issue going forward.

Just got a "Quality of Life"reminder warning me not to put my recycling out before 7pm. Nice white ticket saying i've violated City codes and failure to comply will result in a fine of $106 min to $1000 maximum.

Problem is the #OOPS#wit that issued the ticket got the wrong house. My neighbor put their recyclables out early. Now i dont mind the City taking this kind of action. It's good to ticket ppl that violate thid kind of issue.

But please train your guys right. The garbage wasn't even in front of my property. Can you MORONS at least get it right or we'll make sure ur ASS is fired and hire someone who can figure which property is violating City laws.

The two principal arguments the MUA seem to be making are:
1. It's absudly expensive to fix years of neglect (reductio ad absurdum)
AND
2. Given 1, it's better to tackle the problem on an individual home basis (divide and conquer).
Hoboken are facing almost exactly the same problem as downtown JC, have already have tabled pragmatic solutions, and are chasing funding. Let's keep the pressure for action up on this.

Basement flooding is the tip of the iceberg, though I really feel for my neighbors on the costs and neglect.

My take is that if the City takes no action, people will DIE. The JCMUA admitted in the meeting that flowing sewage in basments and roads were a serious health hazard. Couple that with the serious riisk of electrocution from flooded roads, overloading of the emergency services, etc

OK JCMUA...how many DEAD people do you need to take action?

Yes I think thanks are due to Steven for organizing this look into the workings of the JCMUA.

The messages I got were:

1. FEMA aid is available to qualifying residents of Hudson County.
2. JCMUA would like to work with the residents to find out the causes of the problem and to seek funding to resolve.

I was astonished at some of the exchanges. (Apologies if not perfectly reported).

Resident: "You know where the problems lie - they happen every time it rains"
JCMUA: "We don't, that's why we're sending out the questionaire."

JCMUA: "We had 50-year rainfall high. Our system is designed for a 5-year high".
Resident: "What is the actual capacity?".
JCMUA: "We don't have those numbers with us".

Resident: "Let's get residents, politicians and the MUA mobilized together on the issue of state grants...."
JCMUA: "We don't think we have done anything wrong with our grant applications"

I dont think anyone has seriously suggested ripping up the streets, though it doesnt rule out looking at adding partial storm-water solutions. It makes sense do a serious study on the options and costs involved. We might even benefit tackling the problem jointly with neighboring cities such as Hoboken.

I'd also like to understand the emergency response across the county. NJ declared a state of emergency, but there were very mixed responses at the local level. I understand that places like downtown JC and Hoboken are in the highest risk flood areas as far as insurance...though the plan seems to be "wait till the tide goes out and we'll clean-up the mess". Do we have any real plan in-place?

I'll make sure my neighbors who were flooded know about the meeting.

In the rest of the state:
- NJ declares a state of emergency.
- Union City major asks people to call him or the police for assistance with housing or clean-up
- Hoboken mayor attempts to explain the flooding and when it will subside

Meanwhile in JC:
- 1,400 emergency calls are made
- JC Fire and Police report widespread flooding
- City responds next day by sweeeping the streets and ticketing cars many of which were caught in the flooding

However i think i might have seen a 747 circling the City today with the id JCAF1....

@ cm4cd: you are right to be upset, but the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority says that waste water goes to a facility in Newark and then in the Passaic.

According to the JCMUA site, 50 million gallons a day gets pumped to Newark. Seven inches of rain over 14.9 square miles of land works out to around 1.8 billion gallons - where does the rest go?

I personally dont have a basement, nor a home flood, nor an old building, nor a personal need for seals nor pumps. I have a open sewer outside that is normally a road. I do not build roads, nor sewers, the City does. I agree its my own damn fault if i dont push some of this sh*t back on the people that have the power to do something about it.

I don't know too much, but correct me if I am wrong.
I suspect that we are talking about centuries old houses. Some of the downtowners say in some other thread that their buildings crack only due to cars passing by. So probably an improvement would then start complaints about how UW and the city endanger the historical monuments... I meant the houses.
Besides, I understand that the increase from 400 to 2000 will make new home owners subsidize the works for these monuments... Oh, again, I meant "old houses". It doesn't matter that you suspect that the money are going the wrong way, all I understand is that you will be more comfortable with the developers doing the improvements by themselves. This still means that people who will live there only 5 years from now should start paying for new sewers that will protect the monuments.
... And all this comes at the same time with a strong opposition against new high rises (which might spread the spendings on monument protection on more people)... Most of the people down town would love to have their own reservation where nobody can get in (besides them), but would love the entire city and the future inhabitants of the city to pick the bill for their monuments... you know, old houses...
Still, having no right to vote, but duty to be taxed, like many of the immigrants on the western JC, I'll live with this.

No - it's not about the "monuments" nor lower taxes nor new development, it's about the sewers. If we followed your twisted logic, we'd block the drains coming into downtown from Journal Sq and the heights to stop you dumping on us and telling us to deal with it.

the lines in the street aren't forcing the water through your (our) walls and floors. the rain settling in front and back "yard" combined with a hundred years of cracks and the lack of any waterproofing is causing the seepage. if you're blaming the sewer, its because the sewer is backing up through the pipes. if you have a floating drain plug, the flow won't reverse.

do you live on montgomery between jersey and barrow? then you have the exact same house as me. yes it sucks, but it's the fault of the building design, not the sewer.

When 9th and Brunswick turn into a river, 10th street is worse with cars FULLY submerged, the water flows up over the sidewalk and into basements, its NOT the plugs, waterproofing or any such bull. The drains simply aint doing their job...just like the council aint doing their job by adding hundreds of apartments, taking their cut, and not improving the basic services.

GIVE US OUR DRAINS NOW! WERE LITERALLY SWIMMING IN SH*T AT THE MOMENT.

Guys....i dont care if u give developers 20 year pilots and rape me with city property taxes....but can you please PROVIDE THE F**KING BASICS.

Everyone on my block with a basement is now wading in 3ft+ of sewage because you guys cannot get the simple sh*t right.

Tenth street is now a river. And you've approved umpteen additional properties in the area without any consideration to sewage.

Sort this sh*t out NOW PLEASE.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Meeting Dates

I was at the meeting on Thu March 22nd and have a few observations:

Generally i was very impressed with everyones desire to get the plans right. The architects listened and genuinely seemed to take views into account, the residents had some well thought through concerns, and Mr Fulop did a great job of chairing discussions and keeping things on track.

I wanted to comment though on the issue with Janet. Janet does more than most in the park...she organises gardening sessions, puts up holday decorations...of all the people at the meeting from HPNA and FOHP; as a regular user of the park, she is the only one I've ever actually seen in the park trying to make a direct contribution. Janet walks the walk.

Yes I agree that Janet came across very badly at the meeting. As a friend I'd say you need to sit back a little and trust the people who share your concerns to raise the issues. I think in your passion to get your voice heard, you forgot that other people actually share your views on issues such as irrigation, passive space, dog-free areas etc..all good points...it would have been much more productive to let them speak first.

Re: 'One-strike' you're out for drug-related crimes - Jersey City now gives families a second chance

A few observations.....Australian has it right for the most part. Stop the corporates feeding at the trough and use some the misused funds to build a real JC community.

City taxes
The entire JC tax system is set-up for the high-end rental market at one end and subsidised "housing projects" at the other. No wonder there are very few people in the JC community that feel that they are real stakeholders.
- Property tax for private owners in NJ and JC is obscene.
- Large rental groups have negotiated huge property tax relief

"One-strike"
A NY-style "zero-tolerance" policy on crimes can work. So long as you have somewhere to push people. JC doesn't. It's also so far from having a critical mass that such measures just appease the hawks. JC should consider measures that give people a stake in the community:
- real community-style housing, and not anonymous "project-style" tower blocks.
- real community funding - leisure centers, religious groups, education...anything that fosters local community.
- Option-to-own housing. Build affordable housing...give JC residents large discounts for buying and owning city property.

Inward investment.
JC has courted Wall St for a number of years. Guess what? Most of these jobs are going overseas. If JC wants to attract Wall St, or any other industry, we gotta work on the basics - good schools, med services, low crime, community policing and low local taxes. Focus on the worker's needs and not the corporate needs - attract the workers and the corporates will follow.

Last word
I'm from Europe where taxation and bureaucracy were invented. This country was founded on a revolt against taxation. So why is my net take-home much less (60% vs 40%)? The federal/state/local system here is a huge mess compared to anywhere in Europe, Common Agricultural Policy included.
