NEWPORT PUBLIC PARK MEETING
#1
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

After 25 years, the Newport developer is proposing to build a large, PUBLIC park in Newport. However, the current park plan does not include key community needs. Thus, the Newport Neighborhood Association is spearheading an effort to ensure critical needs of the community, including residents from Jersey City, are met. These include a multi-use court (basketball, tennis, volleyball, etc.), a multi-purpose community room, enough bike racks for non-Newport residents who come from other areas of Jersey City, that no high rise buildings be built along the Washington Blvd. border of the park so residents from outside Newport truly believe it's a PUBLIC park and not just a park for Newport residents and that the proposed 6 foot high fence be reduced to 3 or 4 feet.

Thus, at the behest of the Newport Neighborhood Association ("NNA"), the Newport developer has agreed to meet with the community to discuss these issues next Wednesday nite, March 16th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Newport WESTIN conference room.

The NNA requests that interested citizens from Jersey City come to this meeting and support our efforts to ensure this public park actually meets the community's needs.
This is YOUR CHANCE to have input on the PUBLIC PARK. We need a large turnout to show community support for these priorities so MARK your calendars NOW for this Wednesday nite, March 16th and come join us in this special opportunity to make a difference in the quality of life in Jersey City and Newport.

This park will be an open to the public so any and all downtown Jersey City residents should come out and support the NNA's efforts to get critical needs met.

Re: RINGROAD METERS
#2
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

As the President of the Newport Neighborhood Association ("NNA"), who some call the "Mayor of Newport" my concern with these new meters on the ringroads in Newport is where will the money go collected from the meters. The idea that there needed to be a mechanism to ensure residents do not park in the ringroad areas for extended periods, say more than 20 minutes, is not necessarily a bad idea. However, management has failed to identify where the money from implementing this mechanism will be going. As far as the NNA is concerned, the money should go back to the residents through an amenity such as community meeting rooms like the one in the Avalon Cove development just south of Newport. This is one of several substantive issues the NNA will be addressing now that we had another successful multi-cultural Festival.

Further, North Blvd. used to provide on-street parking 24 hours a day for residents and was taken away by a deal LeFrak made with Morton Williams. By converting it to a metered parking street, the idea was to attract folks from outside Newport to the new grocer to drive up their business. Another key element of the deal was that we would no longer have the Farmers Market that used to set up shop on Town Square Place outside the PATH station. In reality, barely anyone parks on North Blvd. and it hasn't resulted in a boon in new business for Morton Williams so the residents lost about 40 on-street parking spaces and now have to park in the private garages at the tune of about $2,000 per year. This is real money where I come from. The NNA is addressing the reduced number of on-street parking spaces with an ordinance that will expand on-street parking on Washington Blvd. from Newport Parkway up to the A&P shopping center towards Hoboken. So there is a vibrant tenant's association in Newport and it's the NNA, lest you forget.

The Newport Neighborhood Assn. Inc. ("NNA") is excited to be hosting our fourth annual multi-cultural Festival on Saturday, September 25th in Town Square Place (the old Pavonia Avenue) from NOON to 7:00 pm. This is just across from the Pavonia Newport PATH Station.

The NNA invites you to enjoy a diverse array of talent from several cultures, as well as cuisine, select wines and beers, raffles and fun for the kids. There will be performances and shows for every age group.

Headlining is Newport's own Brady Cudmore, a teen pop sensation under Newport resident David Musial's One World Artists label, who will perform with his band Aphrodesia. Expect a rocking show with some Michael Jackson tunes, dance numbers and more.

Doo Wop legends "Select Blendz" will sing a capella classics from the 1950s and 1960s such as "Under the Boardwalk".
Grove Street Bicycles talented extreme sports cyclists will put on a bike show with ramps, lifts and air acrobatics never before performed at the NNA Festival, a major highlight this year.

ANEJO, a popular Latin band fronted by singer and Newport employee Willie Maldonado, will get everyone in the mood to dance and move their hips.

We'll then be electrified by the dance movements of Ayesha's Bollywood Funk NYC.

Chinese Boy will perform a few songs on an authentic ARHOO and then the New Tang Dynasty dancers will take us to the Orient with their graceful movements. Haiti's Divine Inspiration dancers will also perform.

The children's portion of the Festival will include the Kala's Newport Dance Ensemble, and, re-appearing from last year's hit Festival are Muhammad Bilal's Childrens' Classical Music Ensemble, a compilation of up to a few dozen of the best young violin players in New Jersey.

There will be face painters, clowns and Newport's own LEGOMASTER will have his enticing and ample display of Legos for kids available for your child to enjoy.

This year's Festival is a Charity Benefit to raise funds for the NNA Scholarship Fund and will honor the lifetime achievements of a special honoree, and point attendees to the elegant display of the NNA Raffle table and the NNA members selling Raffle tickets, the select restaurants serving culinary delights and assorted merchants.

visit our website at www.newportneighborhood.org and see today's Jersey City Reporter story about this year's NNA Festival.

Re: NNA THIRD ANNUAL MULTI-CULTURAL FESTIVAL

The NNA's 3rd Annual Multi-cultural Festival will honor the lifetime achievements of local jazz musician and classical violin teacher Muhammad Bilal. Bilal began as the lone African-American student in a high school comprised primarily of Jewish students and he excelled, winning Class President against none other than movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Since those early days, Bilal settled into Jersey City where he runs his own Studio instructing youngsters in classical violin, many of whom are at-risk kids living in the most dangerous neighborhoods of Jersey City.

The NNA Scholarship Fund will be earmarked for 2 students, one a Newport resident and another one of Bilal's at-risk kids. If not for Bilal's efforts and funding from the NNA Scholarship, the student would be constantly exposed to the criminal elements of the meanest streets and could easily fall into a life of crime. The NNA asks that all who attend show their support for this very useful Scholarship Fund by bidding on the Silent Auction items and buying Raffle tickets. The Grand Prize is a rare silk-screen donated by local popular Brazilian artist Duda Penteado with other prizes that include a weekend stay at the beautiful and hopping Newport WESTIN; and dinner for 2 at the Hyatt Restaurant.

So take a stroll over to Newport Sunday and come enjoy the festivities.

Re: The Great Newport Name Squabble! (Robert Vivien vs. Sonia Maldonado)
#6
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

Thanks Wibbit for the support. The fact is that the Jersey Journal article mistakenly focused this name dispute on personalities, myself and Ms. Maldonado, when the dispute is between 2 organizations. In addition, they failed to emphasize that we won exclusive use of the NNA name in the State of New Jersey. Thus, the headline should have read, Vivien's NNA Wins Exclusive Rights to Name in New Jersey. Instead, it presented the issue as 2 kids squabbling over a name. I ask anyone with such a criticism to consider what you would do or how you would react if someone attempted to steal you personal name and tell the world they were Joe Smith, not you.

Given that whoever wins at the prelim injunction stage 99% of the time wins at trial and is granted a permanent injunction, this omission is misleading. Additionally, they failed to disclose the fact that the mini-trial on the prelim injunction occurred over a longer period than most trials, from September, 2008 to June, 2009. As such, each party had more than an ample opportunity to produce any witnesses or documents in support of its argument. Thus, there is really nothing left to cover at any future trial other than our request for damages from the Court.

In terms of the Jersey Journal's coverage and focus on this dispute being a personality dispute, as President, I did not have unilateral decision making authority to defend the NNA name and fight for our exclusive use of it in Court but rather, the NNA Board made that decision.

Further, the dispute preceded me as I only moved into Newport in January, 2004 and didn't learn of the 2 Newport associations until the following Fall. However, Ms. Maldonado has persisted in attacking me individually and attempting to make this a dispute between the 2 of us. In this regard, her entire legal strategy was based on attacking my character and offering highly questionable evidence that her use of the name preceded my use.

Specifically, she introduced evidence during the long trial on the preliminary injunction, which commenced a year ago and was completed in June of this year, indicating her first use of the NNA name in August, 2006, about the period when I became President of the NNA. In what seems to everyone to be a clear obsession with me, my first use of the name is not what governs and what the judge based his decision on, but rather, my predecessor as President, Monica Coe. Monica first used the NNA name back in late 2003 by changing her group's name from the Waterfront Association to the Newport Neighborhood Association. This was designed to end the confusion that existed as both Newport groups were using virtually the same name, Newport Waterfront Association and Waterfront Association.

I hope this clarifies some of the omissions in the Jersey Journal article, which was generally a decent article.

NNA SPRING GARDENING EVENT THIS SATURDAY JUNE 14th

Quite a regular

As the President of the NNA, I would like to reach out to residents throughout downtown Jersey City to invite you to join our Gardening Group to plant the first public gardens in Newport this Saturday, JUNE 14th. We will meet at the Port Authority mini-park beginning at 9 am and continue to about 3 pm. The mini-park is located directly next to the Duane Reed Pharmacy on River Drive South in Newport and next to the dog run at the base of the Port Authority pier.

This is a special opportunity as the NNA has been authorized to plant gardens on the Port Authority mini-park, aka pocket park, in Newport, the first publicly accessible gardens in Newport.

The poignancy of this moment is particularly noteworthy because of the fact that many within downtown have expressed to me their sense of alienation from the beautiful waterfront community here in Newport. I empathize with your feelings and offer you the opportunity to begin to break down some of the barriers that have existed by joining with us in planting a garden in this pocket park. To get to Newport via mass transit, you can take either the Bergen Hudson Light Rail to the Pavonia Newport stop or the PATH to the Pavonia Newport station and walk about a block to River Drive South ("RDS") and make a left onto RDS. The Port Authority mini-park is at the end of RDS.

For more information, visit the NNA website at www.newportneighborhood.org and I can be reached at rvivien2003@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing you this Saturday in Newport.

NNA Wins as NWA counter-claim dismissed & transfers case
#17
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

To set the record straight yet again which the NNA Trustees believe is a constant requirement when confronted by the outrageous, false and bizarre claims of the NWA,
the facts include the following. Yesterday, the NNA won again in its efforts to counter the outrageous and bizarre efforts by the NWA to defame its leaders and purposes, politicize what is a voluntary non-profit community based organization and persistently fail to co-exist peaceably in the Newport community.

Specifically, the NNA chose wisely to bring the real fulcrum of the legal problem created by the NWA by stealing our name to the correct court, Chancery, and thereby had its case purposefully dismissed in Special Civil Court. Additionally, the frivolous counter-claim by the NWA, which alleged that the NNA chose the name Newport Neighborhood Assn. to somehow try to confuse the public and steal the alleged goodwill of the NWA, which asked for $500,000 in damages, was dismissed out of hand by the court because there was no basis in reality for such a claim and it far exceeded any reasonable bounds of sanity. So we move forward in our efforts to be a truly representative organization pursuing our worthy goals derived from the widespread support of the Newport and closeby development communities.

As one of the two elected committee persons for the Hudson County Democratic Committee in Ward E's District 22, which includes Newport, I take exception to the characterization that if you support candidates on the HCDO ticket somehow you're not progressive, enlightened and informed on the important issues. For example, whoever characterized Mayor Healy as a buffoon is simply sadly mistaken. First, like I'm sure many of the supposed hip writers on this site, he was against the Iraq War from its inception and indeed, has spoken out passionately against this tragic war. Second, unlike Mayor Guiliani when he was New York's mayor and had the chance to, Mayor Healy believes in and has applied community policing as one of several methods to address the recent rise in crime. As for Albio Sires, he has a progressive record we all can support, whether against the Iraq War, for an increase in the minimum wage, for increased funding for education so young kids from lower-income families can actually go to college and for after-school programs to keep kids off the dangerous city streets in our poorer neighborhoods. It seems Vas supporters are simply rebelling against those in power without basing it on any actual policy issue or social problem the powers that be have caused. It's one thing to address the serious problems caused by Bush and the Republican Congress but what local issue do you blame on Mayor Healy, the City Council or Assemblyman Sires. In fact, Vas has failed to balance the Perth Amboy budget, a tiny budget of a mere $58 million. IN this regard, how does experience dealing with a small budget which he can't balance translate to representing us in Congress where he'll be responsible for a $trillion budget? At least Sires has dealt with the state's $30 billion budget and has the personality to deal with the extreme right wing in power these days and therefore, may actually accomplish something. Vote for Sires and don't throw your vote away as a protest vote against the maching.

I definitely agree with you guys about Sonia's inane censoring of people for no good reason, including yours truly. As HPDweller explained, "a community forum is where people can come together to discuss and debate various issues without the fear of being banned or censored so long as done in a civilized manner." These are my sentiments as well and that's why I'm reaching out to all of you, Butchcjg, wibbit, icricket, Floridian and lostlamancha to join me in re-forming the Newport Neighborhood Association to be a voice for the community and provide a forum for residents to voice their views, concerns and wishes. I look forward to all of your responses to this idea.

Re: Censorship on Newport Waterfront Association Boards

I am one of two elected committee persons representing Newport for the Hudson County Democratic Party. I also have been censored by Sonia Maldonado simply because I asked whether NWA was a democratic organization - where the officers are voted in by the members - not self-appointed by the 3 trustees. Sonia didn't care for this question because her organization is simply not democratic. That is why she censors the NWA bulletin board whenever public discourse that in any way questions her positions on issues, or, in this case, the general make-up of NWA. While she censored me this morning, she lifted the information I provided about the number of registered voters in Newport, 2,500, and the number voting in the presidential election in 2004, 1,401, and included it in her post this morning. She censored my post without calling me, emailing me or informing me why. This is a form of control not healthy in a democracy.

Given the need for an organization that is democratic and that truly represents the interests of Newport tenants, I am bringing back the Newport Neighborhood Association ("NNA") which Monica Coe once presided over and which represented a voice for alternatives and choices NWA simply does not provide. For example, NNA advocated that LeFrak build a park on one of their piers in the north quadrant that is yet to be developed, which they refused. Instead, we're left with the Port Authority pier by the Duane Reade pharmacy, which will cost millions of dollars to rebuild because it's in terrible and dangerous condition. The most recent word on this park is that it will be the size of a middle-class backyard and poses the structural dangers as well as the dangers of the two Holland Tunnel exhaust vents that the Port Authority fears could be terrorist strikes. As NNA suggested, a better option is for LeFrak, in a public-private partnership with local government, to build a real park on one of their several piers in the north quadrant that has yet to be developed. Anyone interested in joining this new version of NNA and becoming a voice for Newport tenants, please email me at rvivien2003@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
