Southwest Missouri firefighters watch as fire hits nonmember
Associated Press

MONETT, Mo. - Rural firefighters in southwest Missouri stood by and watched a fire destroy a garage and a vehicle because the property owner, who was injured battling the flames, had not paid membership dues.

Monett Rural Fire Department Chief Ronnie Myers defended the policy, saying the membership-based organization could not survive if people thought the department would respond for free.

I propose installing security cameras in everyone's bedrooms and bathrooms, so that you don't do drugs or other untoward activities.

The idea of cameras on every street corner does seem a bit Orwellian, but it really is no different as having an officer on every corner (as far as privacy is concerned). You really don't have a right to privacy if you're in public anyway but the idea of someone watching you when you think you're alone is a little creepy.

Are there any public garages in downtown? Should there be any? Where could you put them?

It probably depends on the construction. I would assume that if it is construction on public property (ie, a street) then it's probably tax dollars. I don't know how it works with private construction.

This reminds me of a bad joke: When does a police officer smell the worse? When he's on doody. HAAAY OOHH!!

Most likely, they weren't off duty or on break. My brother is an officer (not in Jersey City) and he sometimes gets overtime by hanging around construction sites. Time and a half for sitting in a squad car for four hours isn't a bad deal. I think almost every construction site on a road has an officer on duty and they use overtime as to not take anyone off of patrol.

So I don't live in JC (I'm considering moving there though) and I'm not going to report this for any kind of investigation especially since it seems like it's most likely legal. But if any residents want to reccomend an investigation try:

NJ State Commission of Investigation (No prosecutorial powers)
http://www.state.nj.us/sci/newindex.shtm

or

the US Attorney for the district of NJ (Chris Christie)
http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/nj/

or

NJ Attorney General
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/

I would try them in that order.
