Given my opinions of politicians you can imagine my surprise when I learned of this presentation being a part of the program Linda and I were offering that afternoon. I remarked to Sandy that I appreciated the advance time to prepare for my meeting both Mayor Healy and Council President Vega. The last thing I wanted was to create a scene during this important time for Jersey City?s often financially neglected museum, which by the way of charter was founded to support and promote the Arts with-in the city. When I was introduced to City Council President Mariano Vega I courteously responded that when it comes to politicians I am from Missouri.
I know the 111 First Street scenario strikes hard at the community of artists that once occupied this beautiful building. I played at the Awareness Event held there a few years back. As a matter of fact I was singing Stephen Foster?s ?Hard Times? when Senator Menendez came by the studio in which we were performing, rather apropos I thought. The reality that I witnessed during the presentation of this check to the museum was that of jubilation on the part of the trustees and staff of the museum. I know this is not the optimum solution to creating a vibrant art community in Jersey City but given the fact that the 111 building is lost permanently to the broad spectrum of art that once was represented there I certainly think it a step in the right direction insofar as the arts in Jersey City is concerned. I can only hope that the city council continues on the path, which of course remains to be seen. I can say that Council President Mariano Vega stated to me personally that the city council is taking up the Cabaret Licensing Ordinances on the books with the goal of revamping them to foster more live music in the city. Again, as I am from Missouri as it relates to these types of statements from our politicians, I can only hope that he and the whole city council hold true to this statement and in fact revamp these archaic ordinances so as to foster a vibrant live music scene in the city. As to Mayor Healy?s singing, his choice was fine with me but I would have much preferred to have had him belt out a great Republican song. Maybe one night in one of the pubs in town next month I?ll have the opportunity to raise a jar and song with him. Peace, Ed

Sounds to me like he wants to take $100m out of the right pocket to put $250m in the left. Only in government do we find this theory of fiscal management applied! It?s a distraction. Do you really think that an ex senior leader of an investment banking firm would spend over $100m of his personal money and not seek a return on his investment?
Lower property taxes start in our communities. Lowering school budgets, cutting civil service payrolls, eliminating wasteful spending, demanding efficiency from our public employees, everyone taking responsibility for the quality of life in our communities by volunteering for community services (it?s our job not our government?s), eliminating ?deals? made between private enterprises and our local politicians, and so on. I?ve yet to meet a politician that left office financially broke, ethically perhaps, but certainly not financially. We have some hard work ahead of us if we wish for our communities to be decent places to live and affordable (reads less taxes). We all have to make hard choices and that starts with actively working to change the current political ways. Sound off, political activity goes well beyond the voter's booth. I nearly forgot. TheTruth you should stop here. I wouldn't want to see you ruin another bowl of Cheerios! Peace, Ed

Give this a read: http://stopspendingmymoney.com/release.asp
That?s just one example of where cuts in spending can come from. Now how about public works contracts, how about all the grant funding of private enterprise, public school costs, and the list goes on adnausium. Now add to this whole debacle our bonded debt of over 30 billion, that?s right BILLION dollars and it begs the question; ?What the hell are you folks thinking about down there in Trenton?? Can any of us run our households this way? Until we stand up and absolutely say ?NO MORE? this insanity will continue. It has become so bad that there are families losing homes, homes that for generations have provided shelter to them, because they can no longer afford the property taxes. This is wrong period. There can be no justification of this happening. We need to cut spending and that?s all there is to it. In the days of free flowing money if we wish to be extravagant then so be it but these are not those times, nor have they been for quite some time, and if we don?t start holding our elected representatives to task, really it?s just a matter of simply doing the job we elected and are paying them handsomely to do, then we will not see an end to this fiscal insanity and yes thievery. And to think one of the impetus? for the founding our fair nation was excessive burdensome taxation. We really haven?t learned much over the years have we? Peace, Ed

"The city has backed off somewhat since this first came up:"
I read the article referenced and it seems to me that the officials are setting up the typical ?Blame Game? and bureaucratic rhetoric in an attempt to prepare us for when the unpopular decision is ultimately made in favor of their pocket books. Those who argue simply the ordered format of the letters that comprise the words of the law will always miss the intent. It seems apparent to me that there was clearly an intent to lease the theater to the Friends of the Loews for fifteen years. Thanks for posting this Mark. I believe that Jersey City needs an Arts venue such as the theater. Although I am not a resident of the city, I am of the county. In the interest of fair play I have a personal interest in promoting the arts. That said I believe that a community devoid of the arts is sterile and non-compassionate. When the merits of any venture are solely judged by ?economics? we loose the connection we have to one another as a community. I know I will bring this to the attention of as many people I can and encourage them to communicate with their city government representatives and express their opinion. Hopefully at some point elected officials will represent the wishes and interests of their constituents again. Peace, Ed
