Ari came through and restored the power.
I wish he was less cryptic about his process.

Somehow hi did it without paying off PSEG balance...

Inertia is expected when you work with government agencies.
Overall it's not that bad. CO2 and fire detectors have independent power source.
The only bad thing is that as lease holder I let my roommate down.
It really affects her life and school - she cannot study at home, no cooking gas, and no hot water.
She does not normally mind the beggars around our building but now she feels extremely insecure.

The second apartment has been unoccupied for months.

I understand, Alex. I'm just pissed that NO ONE is seemingly helping you and you're getting the run-around from countless city agencies. You shouldn't spend one more day in the dark.

Are you the only person advocating for the tenants in your building? What are the other residents doing?

Thank you, jerseymom
Called Department of Public Safety (multiple numbers)
and they forwarded me back to Division of Housing Code Enforcement at (201) 547-4825
Called DHCE again - they will send inspector to my building.

Alex, I don't know how you're explaining this to the officials you spoke to, but this goes beyond a "tenant/landlord" issue. This is a health and safety issue now. Please call the folks at Public Safety. You should not be living in an apartment house without electricity.

Called this number 201-547-5127
It's only for rent control, not tenant/landlord issues.
I'll try Division of Housing Code Enforcement at (201) 547-4825

Sorry this is happening to you, that sounds pretty awful.

Try calling the city office of Tenant-Landlord Relations, 201-547-5127.

I don't know what they can do, but I'd start there. And call today, because chances are they will be out on Monday, which is Columbus Day.

Nobody showed up yesterday. Entire building is still without power.
Wasted a lot of time rushing there from work and waiting for PSEG guy and then for Ari (the building owner).
He always sounds polite on the phone, overall he seems like a nice guy.
Here's what I have so far.
- I paid him $700 (for last 10 months of electricity) 3 days ago
- He lied all this time about paying the balance with PSEG and turning the power on.
- He doesn't want to go to PSEG with me to face the Manager who can turn the power on.
- He does not allow me to pay it myself ($2k).
- I shot the video at PSEG as rep going through building's account and telling me that nobody paid it and account has no name on it (sent it to him today).
- Today is one week without power

On any email addressed to Ari I get one answer "It was turned on at 11AM, I do not know what happened and why you still do not have power"

Thank you so much for your replies!
I figured the way to reach the owners directly.
After a couple of angry emails things started moving.
I have appointment with PSEG tomorrow morning.

What is up with RIVEREDGE MANAGEMENT?

They bought my building (2866 JFK Blvd) 10 months ago.
Since then stopped paying for electric (and charging me for my part of the bill) so it was finally shut off 5 days ago for the whole building.
PSE&G says I have to transfer building's account to my name and pay outstanding balance of $2000 if I want the power back on.
I do not want to do it because there are 2 apartments and common area (hallway) on this same account.

There's no PSE&G meter in my apartment but some custom meter installed by pervious landlord. Previous maintenance would come to my apartment once a month and read(eyeball) the meter number.
I used to have electric bill added to my rent.

The landlord RIVEREDGE MANAGEMENT is very slow to respond to any of my requests. You cannot call them directly, you can only leave the message with third party.
I left 6 messages with this service already.

What are my options here? Cold shower and rotten food for the rest of my lease?

Thank you,
Alex
